Wiping over two pairs of socks: If one wears them in a state of complete ritual purity, then becomes in a state of ritual impurity and wears another pair, does he wipe over the upper pair and then the lower pair?

The questioner : If one wears socks in a state of complete ritual purity, then becomes in a state of ritual impurity and wears another pair, does he wipe over the upper pair and then the lower pair?

The Shaykh : If one wears socks in a state of ritual purity and then wears another pair over them in a state of ritual purity—meaning he wore the first sock for the Fajr prayer, and then at the time of the Maghrib prayer he found that he needed another sock, so he performed the ablution for the Maghrib prayer and wiped over the first sock, and then wore the second sock over it—then he wipes over the upper sock for the 'Isha' prayer and does not wipe over the lower one. However, this wiping is based on the wiping of the first sock. In other words, if a day and a night have passed since he wiped over the first sock, the period for wiping ends if he is a resident, or three days if he is a traveler. The period is not calculated from his wiping over the upper sock, because the upper sock is a branch of the lower sock. As for wiping over both socks, that is not prescribed.
