Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner : Some people buy a kilo of wheat before sowing for eight pounds, but when the buyer receives the wheat in the harvest season, the price of the single kilo of wheat is eleven pounds, and he takes money from this. Is this forbidden or lawful? And what are the conditions of the forward sale? Please inform us, may Allah reward you.

The Shaykh : If the buyer has specified the time in which he will receive the goods, then there is nothing wrong with it, such as saying: I gave you one hundred pounds for ten sa' of wheat to be delivered in Muharram, and it is now Rajab. There is nothing wrong with this, because when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) arrived in Madinah, he found the people making forward sales in fruits for one or two years, meaning that the farmer would take the money from the merchant for dates after one or two years. So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) approved that, but with conditions. He said:
Those who pay in advance for anything must do so for a specified measure and weight with a specified time fixed. من أسلف في شيء فليسلف في كيل معلوم، ووزن معلوم، إلى أجل معلوم
Mishkat al-Masabih 2883
Based on this, we say that if he buys the kilo for eight pounds, deferred for a year or half a year or the like, and then at the time of delivery its price has risen to eleven, there is nothing wrong with it.

The questioner : May Allah reward you, O honorable Shaykh, and may Allah bless you and your knowledge.
