What is the ruling on whistling and clapping based on the verse?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner : The brother asks here: What is the ruling on whistling and clapping? Because he said: What is the meaning of His saying - the Exalted - "the makaa' and the tadsiyah"?

The Shaykh
And their prayer at the House was not except whistling and handclapping
[Al-Anfal 8:35]
, the makaa' is whistling, and the tadsiyah is clapping, and the verse explicitly states that their worship at the House in the Sacred Mosque was like this, in play and amusement, as He - the Exalted - said:
took their religion as distraction and amusement
[Al-A'raf 7:51]
, so their worship was whistling and clapping; therefore, we do not see it permissible for Muslims to adopt these two ugly habits for two reasons:
The first reason: that it is the custom of the disbelievers before, as the noble verse explicitly stated, indeed it is their worship, so the whistling and clapping of the Muslim involves imitating those polytheists in their worship of Allah - Mighty and Majestic - ... .
The second reason: that we still see the polytheists today and the disbelievers in all lands of the world using whistling in their play and entertainment, and they still use clapping to express their joy and admiration for a matter, whereas our Shari'ah has established in place of all of that the takbir or expressing wonder with "Subhan Allah" and the like, as for clapping in Islamic societies when a lecturer delivers a speech and the attendees are pleased with it, they express their joy by clapping; this is a clear imitation of the disbelievers present on the face of the earth today, and he - peace and blessings be upon him - said:
He who copies any people is one of them.
Sunan Abi Dawud 4031Hasan Sahih (Al-Albani)
, indeed he said something stronger in urging the Muslim to distance himself from the actions of the disbelievers, he said:
The Jews and the Christians do not dye (their hair), so differ from them.
Sunan Ibn Majah 3621Sahih (Darussalam)
.
So here are two matters between which there is a difference that we should be aware of, here is something called imitating the disbelievers; and that is that the Muslim does an action that the disbelievers do and he is not in need of it, this is the imitation, as for what was commanded regarding differing from the disbelievers, that one does something that the disbelievers do not do, and rather he intends to differ from the disbelievers; he says - peace and blessings be upon him - :
The Jews and the Christians do not dye
Sunan Ibn Majah 3621Sahih (Darussalam)
; meaning one of them becomes old and his beard is white like cotton and he does not dye it, the Messenger - peace and blessings be upon him - says: You, O Muslim, intend to differ from the polytheist, dye it, differ from the polytheist; so if the Messenger - peace and blessings be upon him - reached this extent in directing Muslims to differ from the disbelievers even in a matter he does not control, the Muslim does not control himself from graying; because this is from the cosmic Sunnah of Allah - Mighty and Majestic - in His servants from among humans that one of them grays despite his nose; meaning: he does not do the graying as the disbeliever does; because the disbeliever himself grays despite his nose, and likewise the Muslim in submission to the cosmic Sunnah of Allah - Mighty and Majestic -, the Sunnah of Allah
and you will not find in the way of Allah any change.
[Al-Ahzab 33:62]
; so although this graying is not controlled by the Muslim, the Messenger - peace and blessings be upon him - says to the Muslim, differ from the disbeliever by dyeing your beard; so how does this Muslim, who is commanded with this command, shave - for example - his beard; because the disbeliever shaves his beard, and Allah has grown for him a beard and created for him this beard distinguishing him from the woman?! How great is the difference between the two matters!! If the Messenger - peace and blessings be upon him - forbids you from leaving your beard always white like the cotton of the gills, and commands you to dye it even occasionally to differ from the polytheist; so how does he not forbid you from imitating the disbeliever when he shaves his beard so you also shave your beard? Therefore he said:
Trim your mustaches, let your beards grow, and differ from the Jews and the Christians
.
Yes.

The questioner : May Allah reward you with good.

The Shaykh : Is that all?

The questioner : ... .

The Shaykh : Good; and with this amount is sufficient, and praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds.
