The Shaykh : Our hadith tonight is about Khubayb ibn al-Art, who is a noble Companion. He said: "We emigrated with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) seeking the Face of Allah, so our reward fell upon Allah. Among us is one who died without having eaten anything from his reward. Among them was Mus'ab ibn 'Umar, who was killed on the Day of Uhud. We found nothing to shroud him in except a cloak. If we covered his head with it, his feet would be exposed, and if we covered his feet, his head would be exposed. So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered us to cover his head and to place some ishdhar (aromatic grass) on his feet. And among us is one whose fruit has ripened, and he is now harvesting it." It was narrated by al-Bukhari, Muslim, al-Tirmidhi, and Abu Dawud. The author explains some of the obscure terms in this hadith by saying: "Al-Birdah: A striped cloak made of wool, which is the 'nawrah.' Ayna'at: With a yaa with a dot below after the alif, meaning it reached maturity and sprouted. Yahdibha: With a dhammah on the dhal and leaving it, meaning both forms are correct: yahdubha and yahdibha, meaning he cuts it and gathers it." Khubayb (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "We emigrated with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) seeking the Face of Allah," meaning that they were striving in the path of Allah, sincere to Him in their religion. This is the standard of the Companions as a rule. This does not negate that there may have been among them someone who strove for other than the Face of Allah (Mighty and Majestic), and this is the nature of humanity; it is not possible for all of them to be on one heart in sincerity and obedience to Allah (Mighty and Majestic). But there is no doubt that the majority of the Companions are described this way, as Khubayb ibn al-Art (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "They did not seek anything but the Face of Allah." So what is said in some historical books of the present day by those who have no worth or no religion, claiming that the motive for the early Islamic conquests was the love of the world and the accumulation of wealth, is a baseless claim with no evidence for it. In fact, reality testifies that the matter was exactly the opposite, and there is much evidence for this in authentic Islamic history. And what is before us now is one of those pieces of evidence, for it explicitly states: "We emigrated with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) seeking the Face of Allah, so our affair fell upon Allah."
