The questioner : The questioner says: What is the ruling on a woman wearing gold jewelry? And what should a believing woman do if she is confused about wearing gold jewelry when scholars disagree?

The Shaykh : Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, and upon his family and his Companions, and those who follow them with excellence until the Day of Judgment.
The stronger opinion in this issue is that held by the majority of scholars, to the extent that some of them reported a consensus on it, which is the permissibility of women wearing gold jewelry such as rings and bracelets, and that there is no harm in doing so. It is established in the two Sahihs and others that
That the Prophet encouraged the women on the day of the festival to give charity and said: O women! Give charity, even if it is from your jewelry, for I have seen you to be the most numerous of the people of the Fire.
So the women began to give charity from their rings, earrings, and bracelets. Women have continued to wear gold jewelry throughout the eras of the Muslims up to our present time. The majority responded to the reports of prohibition regarding this by saying that it is an anomalous report that contradicts the authentic hadiths indicating permissibility, or that it was at a time of financial scarcity, so the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) warned against being extravagant in that regard, or that it is to be understood as applying to one who was excessive in using gold jewelry, such as putting rings on a finger that fill the finger, for example, or bracelets on an arm that fill the arm, or the like. In any case, we say to this questioner: Do not be confused, for the majority of the scholars, the imams and their followers, say that it is permissible for women to wear gold jewelry. If two opinions or fatwas from the scholars conflict for a person, let him follow the one he sees as closer to the truth in his view, due to his abundance of knowledge, strength of faith, and mindfulness of Allah (Mighty and Majestic). If neither of the differing opinions appears stronger to him, it has been said: He is given the choice between taking the opinion of this one or the opinion of that one. It has also been said: Rather, he should take the easier of the two opinions, because the original state is the innocence of the conscience from the obligation to leave or to act, and because the easier is more in accordance with the Shari'ah. Indeed, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) said:
You have been sent to make things easy (for the people); you have not been sent to make things difficult for them.
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 147Sahih (Darussalam)
Some scholars have said: He should take the stricter one, because it is safer. And the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) said:
Leave that which makes you doubt for that which does not make you doubt.
Sunan an-Nasa'i 5711Sahih (Darussalam)
And he said:
So he, who saves himself from these doubtful things, saves his religion and his honor
Bulugh al-Maram 16:32
It has also been said: He should take what his soul is at peace with, even without a stronger indicator, based on the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family):
Righteousness is that with which the soul is tranquil and the heart is tranquil
Mishkat al-Masabih 2774
However, it is generally the case that two scholars or muftis are not equal in every respect; rather, one of them must be stronger than the other, either in his knowledge or in his scrupulousness and mindfulness of Allah. But this may not be possible for everyone to know, so the person remains hesitant. Therefore, what I see as closer to the truth is that he should take the easier one, because it is in accordance with the spirit of the Islamic religion, and because the original state is the innocence of the conscience.

The questioner : May Allah reward you with good.
