The questioner : The questioner says: Is it permissible for a menstruating woman to perform 'Umrah or Hajj? What are the matters that are obligatory for her during that time? And what are the matters that are obligatory for her when she enters the state of ihram from the miqat?
The Shaykh : A menstruating woman may perform Hajj and 'Umrah. At the miqat, she does what others do: she takes a full ritual bath, removes her menstrual blood with a cloth, and enters the state of ihram like other people. She does what people do, exactly the same, except for the circumambulation of the Ka'bah. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered Asma bint 'Umayyis, the wife of Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him), when she gave birth to Muhammad ibn Abu Bakr at Dhul-Hulaifah, to take a full ritual bath, remove her blood with a cloth, and enter the state of ihram. He said to 'A'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) when she menstruated:Muwatta Malik 20:236 So she did not perform the circumambulation of the Ka'bah or the walking between al-Safa and al-Marwah. The rest of the acts of Hajj, a menstruating woman and a woman with post-natal bleeding do them like others: she stands at 'Arafah and at Muzdalifah, she stons the pillars, and she supplicates at 'Arafah, at Muzdalifah, and between the pillars, like other people.

Yahya related to me from Malik from Abd ar-Rahman ibn al-Qasim from his father that A'isha said, "I came to Makka at the time of my period so I did not do tawaf of the House or go between Safa and Marwa. I complained to the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, and he said, 'Do what the people doing hajj do except do not do tawaf of the House and go between Safa and Marwa until you are pure.' " Malik said, concerning a woman who entered ihram for umra at the time of hajj, and she arrived in Makka during her period and so could not do tawaf of the House, "When she fears that the time (for hajj) is getting close, she gets into ihram for the hajj and sacrifices an animal. She is like someone who combines the hajj and the umra. One tawaf is enough for her. If a women starts her period after she has already done tawaf of the House and prayed, she does say between Safa and Marwa and stops at Arafa and Muzdalifa and stones the jamras but she does not do the tawaf al-ifada until she is pure and has finished her menses."
