What is the criterion for knowing that seeing the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in a dream is true?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner : There is no harm in pointing out that some people imagine they saw the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) ... more than once, when in fact they did not see him in his true form as described in the hadiths, but rather in another form, so they imagine they saw him when it was not him?

The Shaykh: Yes.
That is, the one who claims he saw the Messenger (peace be upon him) should be asked: "Describe to me the one you saw?" As came from some of the Salaf. If he says, for example, "I saw a face that was illuminated, with a large beard, all of it white with light," we tell him: "You lied." Why? Because those who described the Messenger (peace be upon him), including Anas ibn Malik, his servant for ten years, said: "He was not disfigured by gray hair." "Shayn" means a defect; he was not disfigured ... by gray hair, but rather there were only about ten gray hairs in the whole matter. So when this person comes and says, "I saw him white with light," he can say "light," but he does not know that ... himself, when he says he is what? White; this is a lie. So he certainly did not see the Messenger (peace be upon him). Or, for example, he described another attribute. "How did you see him?" He says: "I saw him dark-skinned," for example. We tell him: "You lied." He was not dark-skinned; he was white with a reddish tint, what? The cheeks. This is also mentioned in the *Shama'il*. "What was his hair like?" "By Allah, his hair was golden and blond." A liar; his hair was black. And so on. So the one who sees the Messenger (peace be upon him) in a dream must have his vision conform to the noble Prophetic characteristics.
Yes.
