Is it permissible to eat the food of disbelievers?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner : What is the ruling in Islam regarding eating the food of polytheists?

The Shaykh : What do you mean by eating the food of polytheists?

The questioner : I mean, is it permissible for us

The Shaykh : to eat their food?

The questioner : To eat their food?

The Shaykh : This depends on what is known in Islam. If their food is lawful for us, it is lawful for us; and if it is forbidden for us, it is forbidden for us. For example, if a polytheist has prepared food containing pork, it is clear that this is not permissible. However, if a dhimmi (a non-Muslim under Muslim protection) serves mutton, beef, or similar lawful animals, it may be eaten. But if the Muslim guest knows that these animals are killed in their manner and not slaughtered as is the case with much of the meat imported from lands of disbelief to lands of Islam in this time, and it has become well known among people that there are factories that kill these animals without slaughtering them according to the Shari'ah, then if the Muslim knows that the dhimmi's food is of this type of meat, he is not required to eat it. The important criterion in this matter is to look at the food: if it is lawful in our Shari'ah, it is lawful; otherwise, it is not.
