Eating from the food of disbelievers
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question: We are from Sudan, and we work in Iraq. They used to slaughter food for us, knowing that they do not profess the Islamic religion. What is the ruling in the Shari'ah, in your opinion, regarding this food that we consume when they cook it for us?
Answer: There is no doubt that a Muslim should avoid disbelievers, their mixing with them, eating with them, and employing them in his private affairs; because they are enemies of Allah and His Messenger, and there is great harm in mixing with them. And Allah (Exalted and Majestic is He) says: [Al-Imran: 118], so they are enemies of Allah, enemies of His Messenger, and enemies of the believers. It is not permissible for a Muslim to trust them, entrust them with his private affairs, eat with them, sit with them, feel secure with them, be open-hearted toward them, or feel at ease with them. This is not permissible for a Muslim.
Rather, he must separate from them and keep them away from his private affairs, whether in cooking or otherwise.
As for eating the food they cooked in itself, it is permissible, except for what they put in it of forbidden substances, such as pork and its derivatives, or something from their slaughtered animals if they are not People of the Book. The slaughtered animals of non-People of the Book are forbidden and are carrion. So if they put in
the food something from their forbidden slaughtered animals or from pork and its derivatives, it is forbidden for the Muslim to eat the food they cooked.
However, if it is free from these prohibitions, there is nothing wrong with a Muslim eating from their food and what they cooked. But as we mentioned, he should strive to stay away from them and not entrust them with his private affairs.
