Q34: Is it permissible to eat from the food of disbelievers?
Vol. 34: It is permissible to eat from the food of disbelievers if it is plant-based or from the sea. As for the meat of land animals that is made lawful by ritual slaughter, what is from the slaughter of the People of the Book, namely the Jews and the Christians, is permissible to eat; because Allah has made lawful for us the food of the People of the Book, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ate from the food of the Jews when a Jew invited him to barley bread and a stew of dried fish, as in the hadith of Anas narrated by Ibn Hibban and others,
and before the invitation of the Jewish woman who invited him to a slaughtered animal she had poisoned in its arm, as in the hadith of Jabir ibn 'Abd Allah (may Allah be pleased with them both):Mishkat al-Masabih 5931 It was narrated by Abu Dawud. And if its status is unknown and the land is not the land of polytheists or atheists, the original ruling is permissibility until evidence is established for the cause of prohibition. And what comes from the lands of polytheists and atheists, their slaughter is not lawful.
