The permissibility of abrogating the Qur'an by the Sunnah, or the permissibility of specifying the Qur'an by the Sunnah, and mentioning two examples of that.

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : Therefore, we do not rule out the occurrence of abrogation in the Qur'an by a hadith of a single narrator (ahad), even though it may sometimes be difficult for us to recall a witness or an example for such a claim. On many occasions, a suitable opportunity arises and I say: This is a mass-transmitted (mutawatir) text that was abrogated by the Sunnah. If we were to mention what some scholars mention, we would cite his saying (peace and blessings be upon him):
There is no bequest for an heir
, but this in reality does not indicate the original subject, which is the permissibility of abrogating the Qur'an by the Sunnah, but rather the specification of the Qur'an by the Sunnah. That is because his saying (peace and blessings be upon him):
There is no bequest for an heir
did not abrogate a verse entirely from the Qur'an, but rather specified it,
a bequest for the parents and near relatives
[Al-Baqarah 2:180]
. The hadith said:
There is no bequest for an heir
, whereas the "close relatives" mentioned in the verse are broader than those who inherit. So this hadith specifies and does not abrogate, and it is not a suitable example of a hadith that has not reached the level of mass transmission (tawatur) as an example of an abrogator of the Noble Qur'an. In fact, this is a specifier, and the hadiths that specify verses are numerous and very numerous.

Eid Abbasi : Is
There is no bequest for an heir
mass-transmitted (mutawatir)?

The Shaykh : No, it is not mass-transmitted (mutawatir), but it has several chains. Yes, Imam al-Shafi'i may say: It is mass-transmitted. But when you trace the hadiths... it does not reach the level of mass transmission (tawatur), but it is undoubtedly a widely circulated and famous hadith.
We have, for example, of this kind, what came in "Sahih Muslim" from the hadith of Abu Hurayrah and the hadith of Ibn Abbas as well, that when the saying of Allah (Blessed and Exalted is He):
To Allah belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is in the earth. Whether you show what is within yourselves or conceal it, Allah will bring you to account for it. Then He will forgive whom He wills and punish whom He wills, and Allah is over all things competent.
[Al-Baqarah 2:284]
was revealed, the Companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) knelt on their knees and said: O Messenger of Allah, here we are, we have been commanded to pray and we have prayed, to fast and we have fasted, and to perform Hajj and we have performed Hajj. But that Allah should hold us accountable for what is in our hearts, this is something we have no capacity for. He said to them (peace and blessings be upon him):
Do you want to say as the people of Moses said to Moses: We heard
""And we obeyed?!"

The questioner :
and we disobeyed وعصينا
.

The Shaykh
and we disobeyed?! Say: We heard and we obeyed وعصينا ؟!
. He said: So they kept saying it until their tongues were humbled by it and their hearts were subdued to it, so Allah (Blessed and Exalted is He) revealed:
Allah does not charge a soul except [with that within] its capacity
[Al-Baqarah 2:286]
.

Eid Abbasi : ...
The Messenger has believed in what was revealed to him from his Lord
[Al-Baqarah 2:285]
.

The Shaykh : Yes, but the point here is,
Allah does not charge a soul except [with that within] its capacity
[Al-Baqarah 2:286]
, so this is an abrogation of His saying:
Whether you show what is within yourselves or conceal it, Allah will bring you to account for it
[Al-Baqarah 2:284]
. Yes, this is what some people hide: the obligation of it is something people have no capacity for. So Allah (Mighty and Majestic) said, after He (Glorified and Exalted is He) knew the submission of these early Muslims to the judgment of the Lord of the Worlds:
Allah does not charge a soul except [with that within] its capacity. It will have [the consequence of] what [good] it has gained, and it will bear [the consequence of] what [evil] it has earned. "Our Lord, do not impose blame upon us if we have forgotten or erred. لَا يُكَلِّفُ اللَّهُ نَفْسًا إِلَّا وُسْعَهَا لَهَا مَا كَسَبَتْ وَعَلَيْهَا مَا اكْتَسَبَتْ رَبَّنَا لَا تُؤَاخِذْنَا إِنْ نَسِينَا أَوْ أَخْطَأْنَا
[Al-Baqarah 2:286]
to the end of the verses. And the revelation used to descend upon the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) whenever they made a supplication, the revelation would descend from the sky with His saying: Yes,
Our Lord, do not impose blame upon us if we have forgotten or erred.
[Al-Baqarah 2:286]
. Allah said: Yes,
Our Lord, and lay not upon us a burden like that which You laid upon those before us.
[Al-Baqarah 2:286]
Yes, yes, to the end of the verses. So here the abrogation occurred in this verse by this authentic hadith for which we have not found a narrator more than what we mentioned: Abu Hurayrah and Abdullah ibn Abbas.

Eid Abbasi : ... .

The Shaykh : Yes?

Eid Abbasi : ... the hadith ...

The Shaykh: Yes.

Eid Abbasi : What is your opinion of the verse ... the verse.

The Shaykh : Which verse?

Eid Abbasi : The verse:
Allah does not charge a soul except [with that within] its capacity
[Al-Baqarah 2:286]
is the one that abrogated its predecessor.

The Shaykh : No, this does not change ... and therefore, even today you find "Muhammad Abduh" and others interpreting these verses with each other without resorting to the hadith; because there is abrogation in it,
Allah does not charge a soul except [with that within] its capacity
[Al-Baqarah 2:286]
does not indicate that Allah (Mighty and Majestic) does not hold people accountable for what the souls concealed.
