What is the authenticity of this hadith (that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered the setting up of a tent for i'tikaf, so he ordered his wives to set up tents for them, and then the Messenger of Allah asked about these tents, and it was said: For your wives, so he said: By Allah, did you intend that? Then he ordered the removal of the tents, even his own, and postponed his i'tikaf to Shawwal)

'Ayd 'Abassi: In the questions, one of the preachers mentioned the following hadith that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered the setting up of a tent for i'tikaf, so he ordered his wives to set up tents for them, and then he (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: For whom are these tents? They said: For your wives. So he said to them:
By Allah, did you intend that? أالله أردتن بذلك؟
Then he ordered the removal of the tents... his tent, even his own tent, and postponed his i'tikaf to Shawwal. What is the grade of this hadith?

The Shaykh : The hadith is in Sahih al-Bukhari; there is no doubt about its authenticity!
'Ayd 'Abassi: Perhaps it would be good to also mention the jurisprudence derived from it...

The Shaykh : The questioner is stating that, from the perspective of men, i'tikaf is a recommended practice (sunnah) of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and its most excellent form is what is done in Ramadan, and its most excellent form is what is done in the last ten days of it. This is from one aspect. From another aspect, it indicates the intention that i'tikaf in the mosque is not something in which women participate with men. This is clear if we remember that congregational prayer, which is an obligation upon the Muslim like the obligation of the prayer itself, is an obligation in which women do not participate. So it is even more so that women should not participate in the legislated i'tikaf in the mosques, especially if the i'tikaf is tainted with something of showing off (riya'), love of appearing, and jealousy, such that the motivation for i'tikaf in this state is not drawing near to Allah (Blessed and Exalted is He). The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) tore down the tents, that is, the tents that were set up in the Prophet's Mosque for some of his wives (peace and blessings be upon him). And after settling the matter, he also tore down his own tent (peace and blessings be upon him) in which he was performing i'tikaf. This is what can be mentioned on the occasion of this authentic hadith.
