Is there a difference between letting a garment hang below the ankles out of arrogance and letting it hang for other reasons?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The student : Letting a garment hang below the ankles in clothing is a matter of concern in the hadith, meaning?

The Shaykh : Yes, there are hadiths with severe warnings.
The student : So what is the grade of this hadith?

The Shaykh : In the hadiths, do you mean a specific hadith?
The student :
Whoever drags his garment out of arrogance. من جر إزاره خيلاء
... .

The Shaykh : Yes, regarding arrogance. After your question, you said, "How is it, what does it mean?"
The student : First, the grade of the hadith.

The Shaykh : May Allah bless you...
The student : I have taken the advice, and may Allah reward you with good. [Laughter]The student .

The Shaykh : You have done well. The hadith is agreed upon by al-Bukhari and Muslim, meaning al-Bukhari and Muslim narrated it in their authentic collections, so there is no issue. Yes.
The student : Now, regarding letting a garment hang below the ankles, is it about wearing the garment? Wearing the garment, of course, if one drags his lower garment out of arrogance, it is tied to arrogance. If one does not act out of arrogance, for example, in dragging his lower garment, does this hadith apply to him?

The Shaykh : I understand what you are saying. Letting the lower garment hang below the ankles is not permissible under any circumstances; but as it is said, "Some evil is less than some," letting the lower garment hang below the ankles without arrogance is evil, and letting the lower garment hang below the ankles accompanied by arrogance is greater evil. Both are evil, but some is more severe than some. Many people, to the extent that our Lord has given them knowledge and understanding, etc., assume that letting the lower garment hang below the ankles, if it is not accompanied by arrogance as mentioned in the hadiths, is not a problem, because the hadith says
Whoever drags his lower garment out of arrogance من جر ازاره خيلاء
. Our answer to this statement or this understanding could have been correct, and that any letting of the garment hang that is not accompanied by arrogance is not a problem, if this matter were only the hadith of
Whoever drags his garment out of arrogance. من جر إزاره خيلاء
. But we have other hadiths. These other hadiths give us the first meaning, which is less evil than the other, which is merely lengthening the garment below the ankles without mentioning arrogance; so it is evil that its owner deserves the Fire for; but that one is greater evil. And the evidence for this, first, we have an authentic hadith from some of the Companions, among them Hudhayfah ibn al-Yaman (may Allah be pleased with him), that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
The garment of the believer is to the middle of the calf, and if it is longer, then to the ankles, and if it is longer than that, then it is in the Fire. إزرة المؤمن إلى نصف الساق فإن طال فإلى الكعبين فإن طال ففي النار
...
The student : Meaning, anything that goes beyond this ankle is in the Fire?

The Shaykh : Yes, yes, anything that does not go down to this ankle; so it is in the Fire. So this hadith establishes a system for the Muslim who wants to be pleasing to Allah the Exalted and Majestic. The Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) tells him that the lower garment for you, in the first rank, should be its length to the middle of the leg; this is the best. If you want to increase its length a little more, there is no harm up to above the ankles. If it is long, then it is in the Fire. Here, arrogance is not mentioned. Is the statement clear? Here, arrogance is not mentioned. Here, a system is mentioned for the Muslim how his clothing should be, his outer garments, his shirt, his cloak, whatever it is, the trousers that the youth have been afflicted with. Add to the middle of the leg, if it is long, then to the ankles, if it is long, then it is in the Fire. We have another hadith, and it is very great. The Messenger (peace be upon him) saw a man from his Companions whose lower garment was long, and he said to him:
O so-and-so, raise your lower garment, for it is more pious and purer يا فلان ارفع إزارك فإنه أتقى وأنقى
. More pious and cleaner. A statement of circumstance. More pious to Allah and cleaner for his garment. The man answered him: "O Messenger of Allah, I am a hunchback," meaning his legs are like this, they have a curvature. So he wants to cover this curvature. But listen to the answer of the Messenger, how beautiful it is and how much we need it in this age where interpretations have multiplied, especially regarding plucking the eyebrows and plucking the cheeks and the like. He said: "O Messenger of Allah, I am a hunchback." He said:
O so-and-so, every creation of Allah is beautiful يا فلان كل خلق الله حسن
Did you create yourself like this? No, this is the creation of Allah. So show me what those besides Him have created? Nothing. If the Messenger (peace be upon him) did not find for this noble Companion to lengthen his garment, not out of arrogance, but as a cover for this defect in the eyes of people, and it is not a defect, all the creation of Allah is good; so He did not justify it for him nor permit it for him. So lengthening the lower garment below the ankles is evil and greater evil. Evil because it contradicts the Prophetic methodology that He established for the Muslim to the middle of the leg, if it is long, then to the ankles, if it is long, then it is in the Fire. But if it is accompanied by something of arrogance, Allah will not look at him on the Day of Resurrection, nor purify him, and for him is a painful punishment. And this has become clear to you, if Allah wills.
The student : Yes, may Allah reward you with good.

The Shaykh : Welcome.
The student : May Allah reward you and reward you with good.

The Shaykh : And beware of that.
The student : Is it not dragged on the ankles, but exactly on the ankles?

The Shaykh : The answer, as I want to tell you, is
like a shepherd who pastures (his animals) near the Hima (private pasture) of someone else and at any moment he is liable to get in it من حام حول الحمى يوشك أن يقع فيه
Bulugh al-Maram 16:32
.
The student : Meaning, if it increases a little...

The Shaykh : Meaning, he is going to increase it by two fingers? No, cut off the root of evil from its origin.
The student : Sometimes, when I want to have my garment tailored and determine the length of its size, the garment comes out different from what I cut it to. Days pass and days come, and this promise and severe warning of punishment comes to my mind.
Abu Layla : Our teacher, we in Jordan, we say in Jordan, because we see them and talk to them, they comment a lot on these young men, commenting on the one who shortens his garment. And I used to always say, "You have confused us, O sheikhs, a long beard and a short robe, what is this?" So I go back and talk to them and say, "How do you rebuke me with this long robe? Do you not look at your women and daughters in their going out? It is not just above the ankles, but some of them are in a state of exposure, and I am silent, I cannot answer."

The Shaykh : The hadith is authentic. Things have turned completely upside down. The group that was obligated to lengthen their garments and drag them on the ground shortened them, and that is the women; and the group that was encouraged to shorten their garments lengthened them, and this has become a sign. Naturally, we are on our way, as usual, to the Harat 'Ammar neighborhood. There, a person wants to relieve himself, and they have placed two pictures: one representing the women's restrooms, and one representing the men's restrooms. The man is wearing long trousers, and the woman is wearing a skirt to the knee. This represents reality. Whoever took this picture, whether Muslim or disbeliever, it is not our concern; it is from our reality. Those who are obligated to shorten their garments have lengthened them, and those who are obligated to lengthen their hems until they drag on the ground have shortened them. As you know, the hadith is authentic that the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him), when he mentioned this second hadith, said:
Whoever drags his lower garment out of arrogance, Allah will not look at him on the Day of Resurrection. A woman said, "O Messenger of Allah, if her leg is exposed." He said, "Lengthen it by a span." من جر إزاره خيلاء لم ينظر الله إليه يوم القيامة ، قالت امرأة يا رسول الله إذا ينكشف ساقها ، قال: تطيل شبرا
. This is regarding the woman. The second and final question came: "A wind comes and lifts it up." He said:
It extends by another shibr, and does not exceed that. تزيد شبرا آخر ولا تزيد على ذلك
. This is regarding the lengthening, meaning that the Lawgiver permitted the woman, in order to block the means to harm, to lengthen her garment from the ankle to the ground by two handbreadths. The final question came: "O Messenger of Allah, one of us passes her hem over impurities." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
What comes after it purifies it. يطهره ما بعده
. - Welcome, welcome, peace be upon you and Allah's mercy and blessings, welcome, welcome -
What comes after it purifies it. يطهره ما بعده
. Today, what Allah willed, women do not adhere to it - How are you? May Allah protect you, praise be to Allah -
