Is it permissible to dispute over matters of scholarly disagreement?

The student : In the matter mentioned in this chapter, is it permissible to dispute over it...

The Shaykh : It is not permissible to dispute over it, nor over any other matter.
The student : I mean in the discussion.

The Shaykh : No, I will answer you based on your wording; as for whether it is permissible to discuss, yes, it is permissible to discuss, but it is not permissible to dispute.
The student : I mean if there is someone whom we can advise.

The Shaykh : Yes, it is obligatory to advise him. Why would he not be advised? But he should not be advised merely by his own claim, saying, "Why are you doing this? This is not permissible." That is not sufficient; he may respond to you in kind, saying, "Why are you doing this? This is not permissible." But if you intend to advise him and remind him of what came from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in his actions and words, then the advice is genuine advice and is, so to speak, in the prescribed manner.
