A Sermon on the Fear of Allah (Mighty and Majestic)

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner : ... This is ... , and the guest is honored, but we have been lenient with him, so perhaps he will graciously accept, may Allah reward him, in a word of insight from the verses of Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) and the hadiths of the Chosen One (peace and blessings be upon him), and may Allah reward him and guide everyone, and peace be upon you and the mercy of Allah and His blessings.

The Shaykh : ... No problem, we are guests with you.

The Shaykh : Indeed, all praise is due to Allah; we praise Him, seek His help, and seek His forgiveness. We seek refuge in Allah from the evils of our own selves and from the badness of our deeds. Whom Allah guides, no one can mislead, and whom He leaves to mislead, no one can guide. And I bear witness that there is no deity but Allah alone, with no partner, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His slave and His Messenger.
O you who have believed, fear Allah as He should be feared and do not die except as Muslims [in submission to Him].
[Ali 'Imran 3:102]
O mankind, fear your Lord, who created you from one soul and created from it its mate and dispersed from both of them many men and women. And fear Allah, through whom you ask one another, and the wombs. Indeed Allah is ever, over you, an Observer.
[An-Nisa 4:1]
,
(70) O you who have believed, fear Allah and speak words of appropriate justice. (71) He will [then] amend for you your deeds and forgive you your sins. And whoever obeys Allah and His Messenger has certainly attained a great attainment.
[Al-Ahzab 33:70-71]
. As for what follows: The best of speech is the speech of Allah, the best of guidance is the guidance of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), and the worst of matters are their innovations, every innovation is a religious innovation, every religious innovation is misguidance, and every misguidance is in the Fire.
The Shaykh: It is known to the majority of Muslims the saying of the Lord of the Worlds in His Noble Book:
And whoever fears Allah - He will make for him a way out (3) And will provide for him from where he does not expect.
[At-Talaq 65:2-3]
. Despite the fame of this verse among the majority of Muslims, we say, with regret, that most of these Muslims are not affected by it, do not stop to consider its meaning, and do not respond to its explicit text, which says:
And whoever fears Allah - He will make for him a way out (3) And will provide for him from where he does not expect.
[At-Talaq 65:2-3]
. There are many examples of this, and the most famous, most severe, and most widespread is the trial of wealthy Muslims in depositing their money in banks, whether they are called Islamic banks or otherwise. They claim that they cannot deposit their money except in these banks to preserve it. Where are they in relation to this Noble verse:
And whoever fears Allah - He will make for him a way out (3) And will provide for him from where he does not expect.
[At-Talaq 65:2-3]
? The discussion on this point is long, but I want to mention to our brothers present some authentic hadiths that can be considered an explanation of this Noble verse, as examples of how the effect of the fear of Allah appears in its possessor, and how Allah (Mighty and Majestic) finds an exit for its possessor. For example, the hadith of 'Abdullah ibn 'Umar ibn al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with them both), and the hadith of al-Nu'man ibn Bashir, and others, in the two Sahihs and elsewhere, from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):
Once three persons (from the previous nations) were traveling
Sahih al-Bukhari 3465
. Before I complete this hadith for you, and if our Lord helps us with time, we will follow it up or append another hadith. Before that, I want to mention that the stories concerning those before us from the Christians and Jews, who are known as the People of the Book, and whose stories are known as Isra'iliyyat, must be understood to be divided into two categories: one category is that which Muhammad, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), narrated, and the other category is that which people narrated, whether they were from the People of the Book who became Muslims or from others. This second category is what the Messenger (peace be upon him) meant by his saying:
relate traditions from the children of Isra'il; there is no harm.
Sunan Abi Dawud 3662Sahih (Al-Albani)
. But the first category, which the Messenger (may Allah's prayers and peace be upon him) narrated, is among his hadiths that we should accept after it has been established for us with authentic chains of narration, and it is not permissible for us to hesitate in narrating it, unlike the narrations of other Isra'iliyyat that are not attributed to our Prophet (may the prayers and peace of Allah be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) says in Sahih al-Bukhari, as in Sahih al-Bukhari from the hadith of Ibn 'Amr also (may Allah be pleased with him), he said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Convey from me, even if it be an Ayah
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 2669Sahih (Darussalam)
. "Convey from me," meaning "narrate from me," even if it is a single verse. The word "verse" here does not mean the verse in the common sense, i.e., the Noble verse, but rather what is broader than that, namely the sentence that came to us through the path of our Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him), whether it was a Noble verse or a Prophetic hadith. So the hadith is general, covering everything related to Islam, both the Book and the Sunnah.
Convey from me, even if it be an Ayah, and narrate from the Children of Isra'il, and there is no harm, And whoever lies upon me purposely, then let him take his seat in the Fire.
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 2669Sahih (Darussalam)
, in implementing and responding to this authentic hadith:
Convey from me, even if it be an Ayah, and narrate from the Children of Isra'il
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 2669Sahih (Darussalam)
, we are speaking to you about some of these stories that are authentically attributed to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), including the story of the three, which is in Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim. He (may Allah's prayers and peace be upon him) said:
While three men, from those before you, were walking, when it rained on them, so they took shelter in a cave in a mountain. A rock from the mountain slid down onto the mouth of their cave and closed over them. So some of them said to the others: "O you, look for righteous deeds you have done for Allah بينما ثلاثة نفر ممن كان قبلكم ، يمشون إذ أصابهم المطر فآووا إلى غار في جبل ، فانحطت على فم غارهم صخرة من الجبل فانطبقت عليهم، فقال بعضهم لبعض يا هؤلاء انظروا أعمالا صالحة عملتموها لله
. Two conditions are required for these deeds: that they be righteous, meaning prescribed, and the second condition is that they be pure for Allah (Blessed and Exalted is He).
The Shaykh:
Think of good deeds which you did for Allah's sake only, and invoke Allah by giving reference to those deeds
Sahih al-Bukhari 2333
, meaning seek nearness to Allah through a righteous deed that you know from yourselves came from your hearts for the face of Allah (Blessed and Exalted is He), not seeking any reward or thanks behind it. So one of them stood up and said:
And he raised his hands, saying: "O Allah, if You know that I had two old parents and a wife, and I had small children whom I was grazing. When I finished grazing, I would milk. I would start with my parents before my children. One day, the trees took me far away, and I did not return until evening. I came to my parents and milked as I used to. I came to my parents and found them asleep. I stood at their heads, hating to wake them from their sleep, and hating to give the children milk before them, while the children were crying from hunger at my feet
- Imagine what this situation was and how it was. He said: Until morning came, and he was standing at the head of his parents, and the milk container was in his hands, and he did not dare to wake them and disturb them by waking them, nor did he dare to give the children milk, preferring them over his parents. He said:
So this state of mine and theirs continued till the day dawned. (O Allah!) If you considered that I had done that only for seeking Your pleasure, then please let there be an opening through which we can see the sky.' So Allah made for them an opening through which they could see the sky.
Sahih al-Bukhari 5974
. Do you understand? A small stone, a piece of a mountain that fell on the cave, a piece of the mountain that no one can move except Allah (Blessed and Exalted is He). When this man completed his supplication with his saying:
O Allah, if You know that I did that seeking Your pleasure, then open for us from it an opening through which we can see the sky. So the rock moved a little, but they could not get out. Until the second man stood up and said: "O Allah, You know that I had a cousin whom I loved as much as men love women. I asked her for herself, but she refused until I brought her one hundred dinars. I labored until I gathered one hundred dinars for her. When she was between my legs, she said: 'O servant of Allah, fear Allah, and do not open the seal except with its right.' So I stood up from her
... Imagine this situation. The man is not wealthy, he is not one of those arrogant rich people from whom millions come out, and they do not feel or perceive them because of the abundance of their wealth. Rather, he is a poor man, because he says: "I labored until I gathered for her one hundred dinars." You must note with me this labor he referred to, so that you know the value of his leaving this money and turning away from satisfying his desire which he bought with this money.
When the woman said to him, “Fear Allah and do not break the seal except with its right,” I got up from her and left her the hundred dinars. If you, O Allah, know that I did so seeking Your pleasure, then open for us a way out of this. So, by the power of Allah (Mighty and Majestic), the rock moved a little, but they were still unable to get out until the third man stood up and said, “O Allah, You know that I hired a worker for a measure of rice. When he finished his work, I offered him the measure, but he rejected it. In some other narrations, he considered it too little and asked for more than what was previously agreed upon. The employer agreed with this man. I kept planting that measure of rice until I gathered from it a herd of cattle and their grazing. Then he came to me. A year of drought had befallen him, and he remembered that he had a measure of rice with so-and-so. He came to him after many years and said, ‘O so-and-so, fear Allah and give me my right,’ meaning the measure of rice. He said, ‘Look at those cattle, go and take them.’ He said, ‘O servant of Allah, fear Allah and do not mock me, for I only have a measure of rice with you.’ He said, ‘Go and take them, for those cattle are from that measure.’ So he went and drove them away. It was an easy meal: cattle and their grazing, resulting from a measure of rice. He said, ‘O Allah, if You know that I did so seeking Your pleasure, then open for us what remains.’ So Allah opened for them what remained, and they came out of that cave.”
. This is
And whoever fears Allah - He will make for him a way out (3) And will provide for him from where he does not expect.
[At-Talaq 65:2-3]
. Another hadith from these hadiths that our Prophet (may the prayers and peace of Allah be upon him) narrated about those before us from the Jews and Christians. He (peace be upon him) said, and this hadith is in Sahih al-Bukhari:
A man from those before us came to a rich man and said to him, “Lend me a hundred dinars.” He said, “Bring a guarantor.” He said, “Allah is the guarantor.” He said, “Bring a witness.” He said, “Allah is the witness.” So he paid him a hundred dinars in red gold.
. Based on this word, this word in some Arab countries like Syria and Jordan, they express it as "duruwishah" or "jadhbah" or I don't know what you call it.

The questioner : ... .

The Shaykh : Ah, ... Perfect. No guarantor or witness except Allah (Blessed and Exalted is He). It seems that both the borrower and the lender are on the principle that the good are for the good. As the birds fall according to their kind. We have a rich man who responded to this saying, and he lent him one hundred dinars, with no guarantor or witness except the Lord of the Worlds (Blessed and Exalted is He).
They parted with an agreement to repay on a known day. The borrower set out to sea, working as Allah willed. The appointed day arrived, and he was unable to reach the town where the rich man was. What did he do? He took a piece of wood, bored it, and hollowed it out. He packed a hundred dinars of red gold inside, then sealed it tightly. Then he went to the seashore and said, “O Allah, You were the guarantor, and You were the witness.” He threw the piece of wood into the sea.
. Who does this? It is the one who relies on Allah with a reliance after which there is no other reliance.
Allah (Blessed and Exalted is He), by His power and wisdom, commanded the waves to carry that piece of wood until it reached the town where the rich man was. The rich man went out to meet the borrower on the appointed day. He waited and waited in vain, but he saw the piece of wood tossed by the waves before him, playing with it. He was inspired to take it in his hand, and it was heavy and weighty. When he took it to his house and broke it open, a hundred dinars of gold fell out before him. He was amazed at this matter. Then the borrower came to him—consider now how sincere this man was—and he knew that he had done an act beyond natural causes. He did this, and he had no revelation sent to him guaranteeing that we would deliver this hundred dinars to the creditor. Therefore, he ignored everything he had done. He had a hundred dinars, and he had paid a hundred dinars hand to hand. So that man was amazed and told him the story of the piece of wood and how he had received it from the sea. He said to him, “By Allah, I am the one who did that. Because when I felt that the time had come, the term had arrived, and I was unable to fulfill the promise, I did what I did and relied upon Allah (Blessed and Exalted is He).” He said to him
- Look how the good are for the good - .
“May Allah bless you in your wealth.” And he returned the hundred dinars to him. He was content with the hundred dinars that Allah sent to him.
. A miracle among the remaining miracles of Allah. Is this not a clear example of the previous verse:
And whoever fears Allah - He will make for him a way out (3) And will provide for him from where he does not expect.
[At-Talaq 65:2-3]
? This authentic hadith in al-Bukhari means that Allah (Mighty and Majestic) made the sea subservient to this believing, pious, scrupulous man. Like this third hadith, with which we conclude this word. This third hadith was narrated by Imam Muslim in his Sahih. All three hadiths are authentic, by the praise and grace of Allah. The first hadith is agreed upon byThe Shaykh : ... al-Bukhari and Muslim. The hadith of the cave; the second hadith was narrated by al-Bukhari; the third hadith, which follows, was narrated by Muslim. He said, with his authentic chain of narration, from Abu Hurayrah, who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
A man from those before us was walking in a desert when he heard a voice from the clouds. The clouds were addressing him, saying, “Water the land of so-and-so, so-and-so ibn so-and-so”—a name from the names of the children of Adam in that time. It was a voice breaking the usual course from the sky. The man noticed that the clouds were heading in a specific direction, so he walked with the clouds until he found them pouring their load of rain into a garden. He looked in and found a man working in it with a hoe or a spade. He greeted him, and the man returned the greeting and was surprised by him, because he was not from that region; he was a stranger. He asked him how he knew him. He told him the story: that while he was walking, he heard a voice from the clouds saying, “Water the land of so-and-so,” so he walked with the clouds until he reached you, and he knew that you were the one addressed by that command. He asked, “By what merit did you attain this distinction and receive this honor?” He said, “I do not know. I only have this land; I plant it and then harvest it. I divide my harvest into three parts: one third I spend on myself and my family, one third I return to my land, and the third part I give in charity to my neighbors and the poor around me.” He said, “By this, you have earned this distinction from Allah (Blessed and Exalted is He).”
. So look now at how Allah (Mighty and Majestic) made the clouds subservient to this believer, because he fulfilled his duty to himself and his family, and his duty to his land and his neighbors. Today, our faith is weak, and we no longer trust that if a Muslim has thousands of dirhams or dinars, that Allah (Mighty and Majestic) will preserve them for him by a means He knows better than humans usually do. This does not mean that the Muslim should not take the means to protect and preserve his wealth. As I say on many occasions like this one: Is it necessary for the rich man to raise a flag where he has placed and hidden his wealth, so that people know that there is treasure buried here worth millions? He must take the means and place his reliance on the Lord of Lords, like this man who was overtaken by time and could not come on the appointed day to pay off his debt. He did not say, "O Allah, pay off my debt for me," but he moved and took the means, even if that means was not a natural cosmic cause. So Allah (Mighty and Majestic) paid off his debt for him in this strange way. Therefore, we need to revive the faith that has died or is on the verge of dying in our hearts, so that we can dispense with dealing in riba (usury or interest) and dealing with banks, and so that we can dispense with the excuse of depositing our money in these banks, for which we deserve the curse of Allah, may Allah protect us from it, which the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) mentioned in the authentic hadith:
Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) cursed the accepter of interest and its payer, and one who records it, and the two witnesses
Sahih Muslim 1598
. So it is not permissible for the rich Muslim to think that he has no responsibility if he deposits his money in any bank, and to think that he is doing well when he says, "I do not take riba." He forgets that he is entrusting riba to others. Whether he eats it or feeds it to others, all of that is forbidden, most severely forbidden, as evidenced by this hadith:
Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) cursed the accepter of interest and its payer, and one who records it, and the two witnesses
Sahih Muslim 1598
. We ask Allah (Blessed and Exalted is He) to inspire us with guidance and to help us follow the Book of our Lord and the Sunnah of our Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and to adorn us with the adornment of taqwa (mindfulness of Allah), so that we may be among the successful on that day when we meet Allah (Blessed and Exalted is He), the day when wealth and children will not benefit anyone except those who come to Allah with a sound heart. And all praise is due to Allah, Lord of the worlds.

The questioner: May Allah reward you.
