The questioner : The questioner says: A group of relatives partnered together and bought a small cargo vehicle, and one of them works on it and distributes the profit among the partners according to their capital. The question is: Is there zakah on this vehicle, given that its price, meaning the capital, decreases every year?

The Shaykh : There is no zakah on this vehicle, just as there would be none if it belonged to a single man. Working vehicles that are used for the person’s own benefit or used for rental purposes do not have zakah due on them, based on the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):
The Muslim is not obliged to pay Sadaqah on his slave not his horse. ليس على المسلم في عبده ولا في فرسه صدقة
Sunan Ibn Majah 1812Sahih (Darussalam)
meaning that he owes no zakah on that. And anything used for a person’s private use or for rental has no zakah in it, with one exception: jewelry made of gold and silver. The evidence indicates that zakah is obligatory on it absolutely, if it reaches the nisab.
