The questioner : He has another question, asking: Do used cars kept for personal use only, without being rented out, require zakah, whether there are multiple or just one?

The Shaykh : If a person has cars prepared for hire, such as taxis, or large transport vehicles, there is no zakah on them, whether few or many, and whether their value is high or low, based on the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):
No Sadaqa is due from a Muslim on his slave or horse. ليس على المسلم في عبده ولا فرسه صدقة
Sahih Muslim 982a
However, if the owner of a showroom trades in cars, selling this one and buying that one, then zakah is obligatory on the value of these cars, because he is a car dealer, and zakah is obligatory on trade goods, as is well known. Yes.

The questioner : As for those for personal use?

The Shaykh : There is no zakah on those for personal use.

The questioner : Even if there are multiple?

The Shaykh : Even if there are multiple, and likewise for those kept for investment or as a reserve, there is no zakah on them.

The questioner : Yes.
