Is it permissible to convey the reward to the deceased by reciting the Qur'an?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner : Is it permissible to convey the reward by reciting the Qur'an?

The Shaykh : Is it permissible?

The questioner : Conveying the reward?

The Shaykh : What do you mean by conveying the reward?

The questioner : By reciting the Qur'an. Some people have cited your comment on this matter as evidence that you consider it permissible?

The Shaykh : You took advantage of my comment on what?

Another questioner : ... the permissibility of conveying the reward.

The Shaykh : Is that absolutely?

Another questioner : He stated it absolutely.

The Shaykh : Well, I do not say, my brother, that it is permissible absolutely. I say that the earnings of the son are as he (peace and blessings be upon him) said
The sweetest earnings are the earnings of a man from the work of his hand, and indeed your children are from your earnings. أطيب الكسب كسب الرّجل من عمل يده وإنّ أولادكم من كسبكم
, and the Exalted said
and record what they have put forth and what they left behind ونكتب ما قدّموا وآثارهم
[Ya-Sin 36:12]
, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said in the authentic hadith
When a man dies, his deeds come to an end except for three things: Sadaqah Jariyah (ceaseless charity); a knowledge which is beneficial, or a virtuous descendant who prays for him (for the deceased). إذا مات الإنسان وفي رواية إذا مات ابن آدم انقطع عمله إلاّ من ثلاث صدقة جارية أو علم ينتفع به أو ولد صالح يدعو له
Riyad as-Salihin 1383
. So the righteous son, his righteous deed, elevates his parents because it is a trace of the parents' traces,
and record what they have put forth and what they left behind ونكتب ما قدّموا وآثارهم
[Ya-Sin 36:12]
. And I do not say that this recitation benefits anyone other than the parents, or that any righteous deed benefits anyone other than the parents. Perhaps you remember that some of the early scholars say that the charity of the one who gives charity on behalf of some Muslims reaches them, even if they are not the parents. In this position, we limit the reaching to the parents. So the son's charity reaches the parents, and every righteous deed, such as freeing slaves and acts of worship in general, reaches the parents, due to the generality of the evidence we mentioned earlier. As for benefiting from these means or these acts of worship anyone other than the parents, including the recitation of the Qur'an, we do not say this generality. Therefore, it is necessary to reconsider that statement so that what we do not say is not attributed to us. We say only with this narrow limitation. What did you ask?
