The Shaykh spoke on Muslims imitating the disbelievers?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner : In English.

The Shaykh : I think he knows, like me or better than me, that many of the Muslims who reside in those lands, one of the first signs of being influenced and confirming the previous statement is that nature is a thief; he does not maintain his Islamic attire.

The questioner : In English

The Shaykh : Watch out, Abu Muhammad.

The questioner : In English

The Shaykh : Did he say he knows better than me?

The questioner : No

The Shaykh : Here I am, I do not know British, but I feel that he is not fulfilling the message.

The questioner : ... .

The Shaykh : But we are abbreviating as much as we can.

The questioner : He answers that in their group, whether in Britain or America, all the brothers and sisters insist on the Sunnah attire.

The Shaykh : Do you see? This is not my point. You have shifted the topic to a sect of Muslims. I am saying he knows better than me that most of those who go to the lands of disbelief for the sake of da'wah do not maintain the Islamic attire. So I did not intend him and his group. Are they British now in Britain? My point is broader than that: Germany, Britain, Switzerland, North and South America, etc.

The questioner : In English: Discuss with me that in the countries that are themselves considered Islamic, like here, like Syria, like such, most people wear European attire. This is not our research. Our research is about the da'wah workers who go to all parts of the world, and the majority of them wear European attire?

The Shaykh : This is what we, my brother, call, without offense, bias. I am not speaking about Muslims in general; I am speaking about the da'wah workers, Adnan. The da'wah workers who are here and Arabized in their clothing, when they go there, they become Westernized. I am talking about these people, not about the general Muslims. We see what you see, but I am talking about the da'wah workers who go to America, for example, or to their countries, Britain or others. Here they are wearing Arab clothing. If they go out as da'wah workers, they become Westernized. For example, you see him here with a beard. The danger of Westernization has not reached the point where he shaves his beard, for example. But you see him with a beard and a turban, and perhaps a headband depending on the country he lives in, and an abaya. But if he goes to those lands as a da'wah worker, he throws off what is on his head, the turban or the headband, and wears a jacket and ties a tie, and still has his beard. This is one of the worst appearances, and he is a da'wah worker. And in his country, he was not of the type they are referring to. He was here influenced by the atmosphere he lived in. So when he went there for da'wah, he was influenced by the atmosphere in which his life took place. So our speech is very limited. I translated it for him, and I have an example I will present, which is very striking.

The questioner : In English

The Shaykh : And it was my fate to go to some European countries for the sake of da'wah, including Britain.

The questioner : In English

The Shaykh : And the time was Ramadan, so it was said to me that there is a Muslim da'wah worker from the group of al-Mawdudi (may Allah have mercy on him).

The questioner : In English

The Shaykh : In a town about one hundred, one hundred and fifty kilometers from London, a long time ago.

The questioner : In English

The Shaykh : So we took a car with some Muslims there, Pakistanis from the people of hadith.

The questioner : In English

The Shaykh : We arrived at the town, and the host received us with great hospitality.

The questioner : In English

The Shaykh : And we sat at the iftar table.

The questioner : In English

The Shaykh : And the truth is that I found in him soundness.

The questioner : In English

The Shaykh : But I was surprised that he combined the beard, which is obligatory to let grow, with the tie, which he is obligated to remove.

The questioner : In English

The Shaykh : So I found it my duty to advise him or remind him.

The questioner : In English

The Shaykh : Do you hear me?

The questioner : Yes...

The Shaykh : Okay, so I said to him, I am, praise be to Allah, happy to meet you, and it is enough that Islam unites us, and the Book and the Sunnah.

The questioner : In English

The Shaykh : But the truth is, what did not please me about you is that you added to the obligation of the beard the misguidance of the tie.

The questioner : In English

The Shaykh : And I reminded him of some hadiths in which the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade imitating the disbelievers, including his saying (peace and blessings be upon him) at the end of the hadith in al-Musnad:
And whoever imitates a people is one of them. ومن تشبه بقوم فهو منهم
Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah 10:131
.

The questioner : In English

The Shaykh : So I was pleased with him.

The questioner : ... .

The Shaykh : How? I was pleased with him because he responded to me immediately and threw the tie to the ground right away while he was eating.

The questioner : In English

The Shaykh : But the point is that at the time when his response indicated the goodness of his soul, he followed the joy with sorrow.

The questioner : In English

The Shaykh : Come on, extend your hand. Okay, I thought he stopped at the word.

The questioner : ... .

The Shaykh : Perfection. He started to justify why he put on the tie. Here he spoiled his response, and he said:

The questioner : In English

The Shaykh : He said, here our Palestinian brothers are hated by the British, and their custom is that they leave the shirt opening open and do not put on a tie.

The questioner : In English

The Shaykh : So that he is not thought to be from his Muslim brothers.

The questioner : The Palestinians.

The Shaykh : Palestinians, no.

The questioner : In English

The Shaykh : I mean, you do not understand the terms
The believers are but brothers إنما المؤمنون إخوة
[Al-Hujurat 49:10]
. So this man was influenced by the situation he lived in to the extent that he engaged in an action that he may not consider forbidden, for example, but at the same time he does not consider it recommended; rather, the recommended is the exact opposite. But so that the disbelievers among whom he lives do not think he is from the Muslims who are hated by them, he imitates them. This is the effect of the region and the environment.

The questioner : In English

The Shaykh : And I want now to return to the hadiths we referred to earlier, and we mentioned one of them, to remind of a hadith that clarifies this reality: that the good land, its inhabitants are influenced by the goodness of its people, and the opposite is the opposite.

The questioner : In English

The Shaykh : That hadith is what the two Imams al-Bukhari and Muslim narrated in their Sahihs from the hadith of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him). The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
There was a person before you who had killed ninety-nine persons كان فيمن قبلكم رجل قتل تسعة وتسعين نفسا
Sahih Muslim 2766a
.

The questioner : In English: Do they know the hadith?

The Shaykh : If they know the hadith, then we refer to the lesson from it. When the ignorant worshipper asked if he has repentance, and he was told, do not complete the number of one hundred with him, does he mention this?

The questioner : In English

The Shaykh : And the man was sincere and wanted to repent truly, so he kept asking until he was directed to a scholar.

The questioner : In English

The Shaykh : And when he asked him that he had killed one hundred souls without right, does he have any repentance? He said, how not? But you are in a bad land.

The questioner : In English

The Shaykh : Leave this land for such-and-such a land whose people are righteous.

The questioner : In English

The Shaykh : And this is the point here: that the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) commands the one who lives in his town, but if the prevailing condition of his town is corruption, to migrate to another town, and not to leave his righteous town and migrate to a disbeliever's town.

The questioner : In English

The Shaykh : If he has a question, let him please proceed?
