The questioner : He says, now our brothers in the West Bank and in the Gaza Strip have launched this intifada, and some of them are Muslims, from the Islamic groups, and the others are secular groups. This is left to them; we have no involvement in it. The Islamic groups that are active now, especially the masked ones who throw stones at the enemy for the sake of jihad, for example, and this is their capability; they have nothing more than this.
If this Muslim youth is killed, will he be a martyr and do the rulings of martyrdom apply to him, or what is your opinion on this?

The Shaykh : Martyrdom is not achieved merely by dying in jihad. There may be a slain man between the two ranks, and Allah knows best about his intention.

The questioner : Yes.

The Shaykh : As came in "Sahih al-Bukhari", a man said, "O Messenger of Allah, a man among us fights out of tribalism; is he in the cause of Allah?" He said
No. لا
. The man said, "A man among us fights out of bravery; is he in the cause of Allah?" He said
No. لا
. The third said, and the fourth said, and he said, may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him,
No. لا
No. لا
. They said, "Then who is in the cause of Allah?" He said
Whoever fought so that the Word of Allah is supreme, then he is in Allah's cause.
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 1646Sahih (Darussalam)
. So if there were a declared Islamic jihad, not an uprising or an intifada as is said now, and Allah knows best about its motive, then deeds are by intentions.
And therefore this hadith came, with which Imam al-Bukhari opened his Sahih,
The (reward of) deeds, depend upon the intentions and every person will get the reward according to what he has intended. So whoever emigrated for the sake of Allah and His Apostle, then his emigration will be considered to be for Allah and His Apostle, and whoever emigrated for the sake of worldly gain or for a woman to marry, then his emigration will be considered to be for what he emigrated for.
Sahih al-Bukhari 6689
. The commentators on the hadith mention the reason for this hadith, a story whose truth Allah knows best. The hadith is authentic in al-Bukhari with no doubt in it, but as for the reason they mention, Allah knows best about its truth.
They say that a man went out as a mujahid with the Messenger, may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him, and in his intention—and peace be upon you—in his intention was to obtain a woman he loved, who was known as Umm Qays. So he went out as a mujahid with the Messenger, hoping to obtain her as a captive. So it was said of this man, "The migrant of Umm Qays." Then revelation descended upon the Messenger, may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him, and he spoke this hadith,
Actions are to be judged only by intentions and a man will have only what he intended. When one’s emigration is to Allaah and His Apostle, his emigration is to Allaah and His Apostle but his emigration is to a worldly end
Sunan Abi Dawud 2201Sahih (Al-Albani)
, meaning spoils of war,
he will obtain or a woman
, like Umm Qays, to marry her or take her as a concubine,
his emigration was for what he emigrated for
Sahih al-Bukhari 1
. So this is the principle, "Deeds are by intentions".
And it came in "Sahih al-Bukhari" a hadith that is very, very, very terrifying, in one of the battles, where one of the Companions was seen fighting a severe fight, not caring about death, until the Companions of the Messenger were amazed, and they were all brave, with no coward among them. They were amazed at the intensity of his fighting, and this amazement led them to mention it to the Messenger of Allah, may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him. And the Messenger's answer was very terrifying, hardly to be believed except by the true believer. He said, may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him,
He is in the Fire
. This one whom you see fighting the fiercest fight with the Messenger of Allah is fighting his enemies,
He is in the Fire
.

The questioner : Quzman, is it?

The Shaykh : Yes, they say this is the narration, but it is not in "Sahih al-Bukhari". A second time, a second battle, likewise, they came to the Messenger and he said,
He is in the Fire
. And so three times, and in the third time, it occurred to one of the Companions, as is said in the colloquial language, "he puts his effort into his effort", to follow him wherever he goes, to see the fate of this man who is testifying, the most truthful man saying,
He is in the Fire
. How is this in the Fire while he is striving in the cause of Allah? And then he saw him, because in the colloquial, he says—and I don't know if this is known to you—in our place in Syria, this one who wants to play with the cat... "his nonsense," you say...? Yes, this one is not going to play with cats; he is going to fight the brave of the disbelieving polytheists, so they had to inflict wounds on him. So naturally, the wounds became severe on him, and what did he do, while he was watching him, but he put the hilt of his sword, the tip of the sword in his belly, and leaned on it, and it came out of his back and he died. The man ran to the Messenger, may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him.

The questioner : He committed suicide.
The Shaykh said to him, "O Messenger of Allah, so-and-so, about whom you said such and such, did such and such and killed himself."
