The Ruling on What Mixes with Purifying Water

Question: What is the ruling if something ritually impure mixes with purifying water?

Answer: The amount agreed upon by the scholars is that if a ritually impure substance changes any of the three properties of water—its taste, color, or smell—then the water is ritually impure. This is by the consensus of the scholars.
As for when a ritually impure substance falls into water and it does not change, if the water is a large amount, exceeding two qullahs, then it is purifying by the consensus of the scholars.
And if it is less than two qullahs, this is a matter of scholarly disagreement, and the most cautious course is to avoid it, based on the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):
If water reaches two qullahs, it does not carry impurityإذا بلغ الماء قلتين لم يحمل الخبث
Sunan ad-Daraqutni 1:11
. The implication of this is that what is less than two qullahs carries impurity and is affected by it. So the precaution is to leave it if it is a small amount and contains impurity, even if it did not change any of its properties, in order to avoid the disagreement.
And as for when it is more than two qullahs and it does not change, it is purifying.
