The difference between pure water and purifying water

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Q3: The questioner asks: What is the difference between pure water (tahir) and purifying water (tahur)? And what is their ruling in Islamic jurisprudence?
A3: Pure (tahir) is that which is pure in itself, but does not purify others. As for purifying (tahur), it is that which is pure in itself and purifies others. Allah the Exalted said:
And it is He who sends the winds as good tidings before His mercy, and We send down from the sky pure waterوَهُوَ الَّذِي أَرْسَلَ الرِّيَاحَ بُشْرًا بَيْنَ يَدَيْ رَحْمَتِهِ وَأَنْزَلْنَا مِنَ السَّمَاءِ مَاءً طَهُورًا
[Al-Furqan 25:48]
, and He the Exalted said:
and sent down upon you from the sky, rain by which to purify you and remove from you the evil [suggestions] of Satan and to make steadfast your hearts and plant firmly thereby your feet.
[Al-Anfal 8:11]
. This is the purifying water. The correct view is that water is divided into only two categories: purifying (tahur) and impure (najis).
