Why did you publish the takhrij of a hadith containing 'Umar ibn 'Ali al-Maqdami, who is of the rank of the abandoned (matruk), and then mention corroborations for it?

The questioner : The same applies to 'Umar ibn 'Ali al-Maqdami, and you mentioned that even if he explicitly stated hearing it, he is not of the rank of being cited as evidence.

The Shaykh : Yes.

The questioner : I found in *al-Silsilah al-Sahihah*, number seven hundred and twenty, a hadith about the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) changing ugly names to good ones. I saw that you began the discussion with this, and then you brought supporting chains and corroborations. Yes, supporting chains are evidence in themselves, but suppose, my Shaykh, that they are of the rank of the abandoned (matruk).

The Shaykh : What does the supposition benefit us? I answer: if a questioner asks me a question, we say this happened, and he says it did not happen, but let us suppose it did happen, I tell him, suppose the answer is such and such.

The questioner : Fine, I will remove the phrase "suppose" now.

The Shaykh : But what is the benefit of the supposition?

The questioner : But I say, you, my Shaykh, placed him at the beginning of the routes of the hadith. If he were abandoned (matruk), how did you publish the hadiths?

The Shaykh : This is a matter of classification, and one does not only look at the aspect you are now trying to say is the opposite of the correct one. One might observe, for example, for the sake of approximation, that the narrator of this one is Imam Ahmad, and the narrators of those supporting chains are like al-Tabarani and al-Bazzar, and others who are below Imam Ahmad in rank. In other words, the criteria for preference are balanced against each other. I say this as an example, but in reality, if the book were with us, it might help me or help you. In any case, this is an aid in knowing the truth of what we are discussing, if Allah wills.

The questioner : Praise be to Allah. May Allah bless you.

The Shaykh : And may He reward you.
