The questioner : Our Shaykh, here in the book Tadhhib al-Tadhhib, in the biography of Usamah ibn Zayd al-Laythi, the al-Hafiz transmitted from al-Hakim in the Introduction that he said regarding Usamah ibn Zayd: “This is one from whom Muslim narrated, and I inferred from the abundance of his narrations that he is a man of a sound book with him.” This is the statement of the al-Hafiz: “I inferred from the abundance of his narrations that he is a man of a sound book with him?”

The Shaykh : A sound book with Muslim.

The questioner : That is, with Muslim. He says that when Muslim narrated extensively from Usamah ibn Zayd al-Laythi, that indicates that he is a man of a sound book with him. What is your opinion, our Shaykh, of this statement?

The Shaykh : It appears that he said something he found but did not clarify. Otherwise, this statement could be applied to every narrator from whom a large number of narrations are transmitted. One who is committed to authenticity in narration? I do not think this is necessary. That is, it is not necessary that a narrator from whom a large number of narrations are transmitted in one of the two Sahihs, let alone others, must have a book. But it appears, and Allah knows best, that al-Hakim had information in his mind that suggested to him that he had such a book. Otherwise, mere narration does not mean that he has a book.

The questioner : Yes, or perhaps because Usamah ibn Zayd was spoken about regarding his memorization.

The Shaykh : He was spoken about, yes, but where did he get the issue of the book from?

The questioner : On the basis that if the narrator has poor memorization, and he took from his book, then his narration would be straight. And Imam Muslim is noble in that he did not take from his narration from his memorization, since he was spoken about regarding his memorization.

The Shaykh : Fine, this is also what the predecessors brought. Yes, yes, yes.

Another questioner : Our Shaykh, is it not said that the practice of Muslim (may Allah have mercy on him), the practice of Muslim (may Allah have mercy on him), was that he paid special attention to the hadith manuscripts, and his chains are numerous, his chains are numerous. He transmits through the manuscripts, from the manuscripts. So perhaps he found a manuscript for him, and this consideration or this suspicion came to him, meaning the methodology of Muslim that he had.

The Shaykh : May Allah reward you, Abu 'Ubaydah. It is possible that this and that can be said, but do we rely on this statement, because it is possible that he meant such and such, or he meant such and such? It does not give us this conviction. It can be said, but is it adopted? Is it said that Muslim only narrated from Usamah ibn Zayd al-Laythi because he was narrating from a book? It is difficult.

The questioner : Yes.

The Shaykh : Belief in this.
