What is your opinion regarding the statement of Ya'qub ibn Shu'bah: "Our companions merely permitted including the hadith of Abu 'Ubaydah from his father in the Musnad (meaning in a connected hadith)

The questioner : (May Allah preserve you) You spoke about Abu 'Ubaydah ibn 'Abdullah ibn Mas'ud hearing from his father, and you mentioned that the stronger position is that it is not connected.

The Shaykh : Yes.

The questioner : Here is the statement of Ya'qub ibn Shu'bah, who says: "Our companions merely permitted including the hadith of Abu 'Ubaydah from his father in the Musnad, meaning in a connected hadith, because of Abu 'Ubaydah's knowledge of his father's hadith and its authenticity, and that he did not transmit any denounced hadith therein.

The Shaykh : Excuse me, what did he say?

The questioner : Ya'qub ibn Shu'bah said: "Our companions merely permitted.

The Shaykh : Permitted.

The questioner : That is, permitted, meaning they excused themselves. Our companions merely permitted including the hadith of Abu 'Ubaydah from his father from Ibn Mas'ud in the Musnad, meaning in a connected hadith, because of Abu 'Ubaydah's knowledge of his father's hadith and its authenticity, and because he did not transmit any denounced hadith therein. This is from the one who wrote the commentary on al-Tirmidhi's 'Ilal, who transmitted this text from him.

The Shaykh : I do not believe that such a statement makes the hadith of Abu 'Ubaydah from his father a valid hadith, for two reasons. The first reason is that it contradicts the scientific principles, and especially since, as is not hidden from you, they explicitly stated that he did not hear from his father because his father died when he was young. This is according to the principles. The other reason is that we find some of those known for leniency in authenticating and grading hadiths as good, such as al-Hafiz al-Tirmidhi, who cites as a defect the disconnection in what he narrates through the route of Abu 'Ubaydah from his father. So this is an opinion of his that does not benefit us in relying on it and authenticating all the narrations that Abu 'Ubaydah narrates from his father. We also say, out of caution, if he does not have a supporting chain or a corroborating narration or something similar for the narrations that Abu 'Ubaydah narrates from his father. As for being certain that he knows his father's authentic hadiths and that there is nothing in his narration from the denounced ones, this is, by Allah, we do not know how to reconcile it, and we find that those before us have rejected many hadiths on this basis.

The questioner : On the basis of this defect.

The Shaykh : Yes, indeed.

The questioner: Yes.
