The science of understanding is divided into two sections.

The Shaykh : It is necessary to return to the science of transmission and the science of understanding. The science of understanding is divided into two sections, as is well known: the science of hadith terminology and the principles of jurisprudence. There is no doubt that the early scholars of hadith were of two types; this cannot be denied. Some were knowledgeable in both transmission and understanding, while others were bearers of knowledge, which is transmission in reality. Therefore, I find this division objectionable, as it implies diminishing the rights of those transmitters, in that they were scholars of what they narrated and knew what they narrated, distinguishing between authentic and weak narrations and the like.
