Is the basmalah and the seeking of refuge prescribed in every rak'ah, or is it sufficient in the first rak'ah?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner : Is the seeking of refuge and the basmalah prescribed in every rak'ah, or is it sufficient in the first rak'ah?

The Shaykh : As for the seeking of refuge, some scholars said that it is recommended in the first rak'ah and in the remaining rak'ahs, while other scholars said that it is not recommended except in the first rak'ah. As for the basmalah, it follows al-Fatihah, so one recites the basmalah in every rak'ah, except that the basmalah is not part of al-Fatihah. Therefore, if one recites in a prayer where the recitation is loud, he does not recite the basmalah loudly; rather, he recites it quietly, and then he recites loudly from the phrase
[All] praise is [due] to Allah, Lord of the worlds - الحمد لله رب العالمين
[Al-Fatihah 1:2]
to the end.

The questioner : May Allah reward you.
