Reminder: What came in the Book and the Sunnah in an absolute form, without being restricted by a specific attribute, is to be applied as it came, and the discussion is about placing the hands on the chest in prayer.

The Shaykh : Praise is to Allah; we praise Him, seek His help, and seek His forgiveness. We seek refuge in Allah from the evil of our own souls and from the evil of our deeds. Whoever Allah guides, none can misguide, and whoever He misguides, none can guide. And I bear witness that there is no god but Allah alone, with no partner, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His slave and His Messenger.
O you who have believed, fear Allah as He should be feared and do not die except as Muslims [in submission to Him].
[Ali 'Imran 3:102]
,
O mankind, fear your Lord, who created you from one soul and created from it its mate and dispersed from both of them many men and women. And fear Allah, through whom you ask one another, and the wombs. Indeed Allah is ever, over you, an Observer.
[An-Nisa 4:1]
,
(70) O you who have believed, fear Allah and speak words of appropriate justice. (71) He will [then] amend for you your deeds and forgive you your sins. And whoever obeys Allah and His Messenger has certainly attained a great attainment.
[Al-Ahzab 33:70-71]
. As for what follows:
The best of speech is the speech of Allah, the best of guidance is the guidance of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him and his family), and the worst of matters are their innovations. Every innovation is a religious innovation, every religious innovation is misguidance, and every misguidance is in the Fire.
I must remind you of a principle I have previously pointed out time and again: that what comes in the Book or the Sunnah in an absolute form, without being restricted by a condition or attribute, must be applied as it came, without restriction or description. And the opposite is the opposite: if a text comes restricted by time, place, or attribute, it is not permissible to remove that restriction from that text; rather, it is to be performed as it was described and as it was restricted. Accordingly, a Muslim should not come to a form of prayer for which no specific description has been given and describe it himself, either by his words or his actions, with a specific attribute. That would be from the category of innovation and introducing new things into the religion. You all know the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):
Avoid novelties, for every novelty is an innovation, and every innovation is an error.
Sunan Abi Dawud 4607Sahih (Al-Albani)
, and in another hadith:
and every going astray is in the Fire
Sunan an-Nasa'i 1578Sahih (Darussalam)
.
Based on this, in some Arab countries—and indeed in some of the schools of jurisprudence followed there—it is held that the Sunnah is to place the right hand over the left on the heart, not on the chest. This is contrary to the Sunnah. The Sunnah is to place them on the chest, not on the heart. The heart which he (peace be upon him) described by saying:
Beware! There is a piece of flesh in the body if it becomes good (reformed) the whole body becomes good but if it gets spoilt the whole body gets spoilt and that is the heart.
Sahih al-Bukhari 52
. It is not from the Sunnah to place the hands this way, deviating to the left with them. Rather, the Sunnah is to place them this way on the chest. Whoever takes them to the left with a philosophical justification that has no basis—namely, that the heart is the center of faith, and that placing the hands on this heart is a means of preserving faith, whose abode is the heart—these are justifications for which Allah has not sent down any authority. It has not come in any hadith—even if it were a weak or fabricated hadith—that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) deviated in placing his hands on the chest toward the heart this way. You will find some of them deviating in the placement of their hands, and then their arm goes under their armpit. The Sunnah is to place the hands here on the chest, not to deviate with them this way to the left on the heart. Deviating with them to the left on the heart is like what one does this way; there is no basis for this or that. Rather, the placement is on the chest. It has come in some books of tafsir from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), in the interpretation of His saying (Glorified and Exalted is He):
(1) Indeed, We have granted you, [O Muhammad], al-Kawthar. (2) So pray to your Lord and sacrifice [to Him alone].
[Al-Kawthar 108:1-2]
, that he said:
and sacrifice وانحر
, meaning: place your hands at the throat. So the throat is here, not the throat here.
This is what I wished to remind you of before answering your questions.
