Did it reach us from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he prayed with his head uncovered, or that he (peace and blessings be upon him) prayed with an 'imamah without a qalansuwa?

The questioner : Some of the brothers consistently lead people in prayer without an 'imamah, and he says that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) led people in prayer without an 'imamah, and he has made this action a habit?

The Shaykh : The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) led people in prayer as imam without what?

The questioner : An 'imamah.

The Shaykh : Perhaps you mean that this person said he prayed without a head covering, meaning not without an 'imamah?

The questioner : A head covering, and by Allah, I am like this...

The Shaykh : What do you mean, and what does he mean?

The questioner : I mean what he puts on his head, whether it is a taqiyah, a hat, or anything else.

The Shaykh : The taqiyah, may Allah guide you and him, is not called an 'imamah. So what is your question?

The questioner : He prayed without any head covering at all.

The Shaykh : I told you to say that, I did not say yes, you went around and said 'imamah or taqiyah?

The questioner : Forgive me, O Shaykh.

The Shaykh : May Allah forgive you for wasting our time. It is not reported from the Messenger (peace be upon him) except in a weak hadith that does not serve as a proof that he prayed with the qalansuwa, which is the taqiyah, in front of him as a sutrah, and this is a weak hadith that does not serve as a proof. As for him praying with a taqiyah or qalansuwa and not having an 'imamah on it, that is possible because this was the custom of the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him). He would wear whatever was available to him: sometimes a taqiyah without an 'imamah, sometimes an 'imamah without a taqiyah, sometimes an 'imamah over a qalansuwa, and so on. So there is ease in the matter, but there is no affectation and no difficulty. One wears whatever is available on his head. However, it was not among his way (peace and blessings be upon him) to walk in the streets with his head uncovered, and consequently, it was not among his way (peace and blessings be upon him) to pray with his head uncovered. Is that clear?

The questioner : Yes, it is clear.

The Shaykh : Well, what else do you have?

The questioner : Well, this man who prays with his head uncovered and has made it a habit, is there anything wrong with that?

The Shaykh : This is disliked, contrary to the Sunnah.
