The Shaykh’s remarks on the verse (And whoever opposes the Messenger after the guidance has become clear to him)

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : But we, by the grace of the scholars who came before us, became aware of this important point, which is the necessity of understanding the Book and the Sunnah according to the methodology of the righteous Salaf. And evidence for this is the saying of Allah, Blessed and Exalted is He:
And whoever opposes the Messenger after guidance has become clear to him and follows other than the way of the believers - We will give him what he has taken and drive him into Hell, and evil it is as a destination.
[An-Nisa 4:115]
Here is a very subtle and delicate point. In this noble verse, our Lord mentioned the path of the believers, conjoined to the opposition to Allah and the Messenger, and He said:
And whoever opposes the Messenger after guidance has become clear to him
[An-Nisa 4:115]
He did not suffice with this opposition; He conjoined to it His saying:
and follows other than the way of the believers
[An-Nisa 4:115]
,
We will give him what he has taken and drive him into Hell, and evil it is as a destination.
[An-Nisa 4:115]
Do you see what the point is in mentioning the path of the believers? If the verse had been simply: "And whoever opposes the Messenger after the guidance has become clear to him, We will turn him to what he has turned to and cast him into Hellfire, and evil is the destination," do you think that would have fully served the purpose for which the verse was established:
and follows other than the way of the believers
[An-Nisa 4:115]
? We say: No. So here is a profound point in Allah’s, Mighty and Majestic, mention of the phrase:
and follows other than the way of the believers
[An-Nisa 4:115]
, conjoined to the saying of the Lord of the Worlds:
And whoever opposes the Messenger after guidance has become clear to him and follows other than the way of the believers
[An-Nisa 4:115]
Why did He mention this phrase? It becomes clear to you now why? It is that one is upon the path of the believers who followed him, (peace and blessings be upon him), with excellence. Otherwise, if we had done as the Mu'tazilah and the Khawarij did, imposing our heads and our desires, or rather our whims, upon the texts of the Book and the Sunnah, we would have strayed into a far-reaching error.
