Is it permissible to attribute motion and direction to Allah the Exalted?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : When you say:
The Most Merciful [who is] above the Throne established. الرحمن على العرش استوى
[Taha 20:5]
meaning He rose above, it means you have placed Him in a direction, and you have described Allah as being in a direction. This is not befitting of Allah (Mighty and Majestic); because direction is an attribute of created beings. Ibn Taymiyyah says that if someone claims direction or denies it, we ask him: what do you mean by this word? If he says Allah is in a direction, meaning in the direction of elevation as He described Himself, then we have no way to refute him twice. The first time is that the word "direction" is not found in his wording, and the second time is that he denied the meaning established in the Shari'ah in the verses of istiwaa' (rising above the Throne) and elevation. Is that clear to you now?

The questioner : It is clear, but do not the proofs you mentioned indicate that He moves?

The Shaykh : We do not say He moves, my dear. We do not say that. If we were to say that the meaning of "came" is "moved," it would mean we are attributing to our Lord the attribute that we know from ourselves.
