The Shaykh’s advice to his students regarding the prohibition of standing up for people.

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner: Peace be upon you.

The Shaykh : And upon you be peace, and the mercy of Allah and His blessings. Welcome, how are you? Welcome, greetings.
Rest, my brothers, and relieve yourselves from this standing up; because this standing up has no basis in Islam, and it is also one of the customs that came to us from the colonizers who colonized our lands. And the best of guidance is the guidance of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him). And it was part of his guidance (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) that when he entered upon his Companions, no one would stand up for him. And if this standing up for the sake of honor and respect had been permissible in Islam, then the most deserving of all people of such honor would have been our Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), both in terms of his status and in terms of those who stand up. The Companions are the people who know the status of the Messenger (peace be upon him) best. So, if it is known in history and in the authentic biography that they did not stand up for him, as Anas ibn Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) says:
No one was more beloved to them than the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and they did not stand up for him because of what they knew of his dislike of it. ما كان شخص أحب إليهم من رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم وكانوا لا يقومون له لما يعلمون من كراهيته لذلك
Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah 18:277
And as we said, the best of guidance is the guidance of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him and his family); so all Muslims should accustom themselves to the Sunnah, for that is better for them and more lasting. And I know the difficulty of abandoning the habit that people have been afflicted with, but every Muslim should accustom himself gradually, for example, if your friend has no need, do not make an effort to stand up for him, because if you make him understand that this is the Sunnah, and then you do not stand up for him, he will not feel in his heart any whispering from Satan that he did not stand up out of arrogance or contempt for him... and so on. For example, the children, our children, our brothers' children... and so on, we do not accustom them to the idea that whenever we enter, they must stand up; and so the circle expands little by little until the whole country no longer knows this foreign system. And this is a topic that would take a long time.
