The questioner : What is your opinion, may Allah reward you, regarding one who holds back his urine for the sake of prayer and maintaining his ablution, whether due to cold or any other reason? Is there any sin upon him?
The Shaykh : Yes. There is a sin upon him because he has disobeyed the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:Riyad as-Salihin 1753 If a person prays while holding back urine or feces, he has disobeyed the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). In fact, some scholars have held that his prayer is invalid in this state. He must relieve himself, meaning he must urinate or defecate. Then, if he finds water and is able to use it without harm, let him do so. If he does not find water, or if he fears harm from using it, the matter is broad, and praise be to Allah. Let him perform dry ablution (tayammum). His prayer with tayammum, without holding back urine or feces, is better than his prayer with ablution while holding back urine and feces.
And let him keep in mind, when his soul calls him to prayer while he is holding back the two excretions, the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):Riyad as-Salihin 1753 If he keeps this in mind, he will not go to pray while holding back the two excretions. Yes.
The questioner : May Allah reward you and bless you, O honorable Shaykh.
The Shaykh : Yes. There is a sin upon him because he has disobeyed the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
No Salat (prayer) should be performed when the food has been served, nor should it be performed when a person is in need of relieving himself.
لا صلاة بحضرة طعام ولا وهو يُدافعه الأخبثانAnd let him keep in mind, when his soul calls him to prayer while he is holding back the two excretions, the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):
No Salat (prayer) should be performed when the food has been served, nor should it be performed when a person is in need of relieving himself.
