A man in Europe bought a leather jacket, and it later turned out to be pigskin. What is the ruling on wearing it and praying in it, and is it permissible to give it as a gift to a Christian?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Al-Halabi : A man in a European country bought a leather coat, and then it became clear to him that it was made of pigskin. What is its ruling? If it is forbidden, is it permissible to give it as a gift to a Christian?

The Shaykh : This question has two aspects: the first is whether the prayer is valid with this skin or not; and the second is, if it is forbidden, is it valid to give it as a gift to a polytheist or a Christian? I say that both matters are permissible: the prayer is valid, and keeping this garment which is made of pigskin is permissible, because the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) established a general rule and said:
Narrated Ibn 'Abbas: That the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: "Any skin tanned, then it has been made pure." This Hadith is Hasan Sahih. This is acted upon according to most of the people of knowledge, they say that when the skin of a dead animal has been tanned then it has been made pure. [Abu 'Eisa said:] Ash-Shafi'i said: "Any dead animals skin that is tanned, then it has been made pure, except for the dog and the pig." Some of the people of knowledge among the Companions of the Prophet (ﷺ) disliked skins of predators even when tanned, and this is the view of 'Abdullah bin Al-Mubarak, Ahmad and Ishaq, and they were firm about not wearing them and performing Salat in them. Ishaq bin Ibrahim said: "The saying of the Prophet (ﷺ):'Any skin that is tanned, then it has been made pure' only refers to the skins of animals whose meat is eaten." This is how it was explained by An-Nasr bin Shumail. كل إهاب دبغ فقد طهر
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 1728Sahih (Darussalam)
Any skin tanned, then it has been made pure. أيما إهاب دبغ فقد طهر
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 1728Sahih (Darussalam)
This includes pigskin, which is also a point of disagreement. Consequently, and even more so, dog skin, because these are among the points of disagreement, as well as fox, leopard, and lion skin, and so on. As long as these skins have been tanned, they have become pure, especially since the art of tanning in the present age is more refined, higher, purer, and cleaner than tanning with urine, salt, and similar primitive, natural means. Therefore, this skin from which the jacket or something else was made is pure, and it is permissible to wear it, permissible to pray in it, and permissible to give it as a gift to a disbeliever.
Is there anything else? The answer has ended, and praise be to Allah, with the call to prayer.
