The questioner : From Algeria, a questioner sent a set of questions. In the first question, he says: When a person enters the mosque and begins the two rak'ahs for the mosque, the greeting of the mosque, and while he is praying the first rak'ah he hears the voice of the mu'adhdhin, what must he do? Does he complete it or stop?

The Shaykh : It appears that the questioner intended to ask about hearing the iqamah. The answer, on this assumption, is that if a person begins a voluntary prayer, whether it is the greeting of the mosque, a rawatib prayer, or a purely voluntary prayer, and then the iqamah is called, if he is in the second rak'ah, he should complete it briefly. If he is in the first rak'ah, he should break it off without saying the taslim and join the imam. The evidence for this is the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)
When the Iqamah has been called for the Salat then there is no Salat except the obligatory.
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 421Sahih (Darussalam)
. His statement
there is no Salat except the obligatory.
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 421Sahih (Darussalam)
It can also be understood as
So there is no prayer
no beginning and no continuation. However, when we apply this to what the Sunnah indicates from another angle, we find that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said
Whoever catches a raka of the prayer has caught the prayer.
Muwatta Malik 1:15
. Thus, the one who is praying voluntarily and has stood up for the second rak'ah has caught a rak'ah of this voluntary prayer in a state where it is permissible for him to begin a voluntary prayer, so let him continue and complete it. As for if he is in the first rak'ah, he has not caught a rak'ah, so he does not complete it; rather, he breaks it off without saying the taslim and joins the imam.
On this occasion, I would like to point out something that some people do. You find the mu'adhdhin calling the iqamah while a man is sitting next to his brother, and they continue talking until the imam bows, then they stand up and bow with him. This is undoubtedly a great deprivation, because they missed catching the takbir of ihram, they missed reciting al-Fatihah, they missed gathering with the Muslims, and they deviated from the Muslims. What they are talking about, they can continue after the prayer. So let a person beware of Satan’s deception and his discouragement from good, and let him stand up for prayer from the moment the iqamah is called to catch the takbir of ihram with the imam and catch the recitation of al-Fatihah and whatever is easy.
And another thing, and as they say, a thing reminds one of another: we find some people who come early to the mosque and then sit in the back of the mosque. When the iqamah is called, they stand up and enter the row. This is a deprivation: that they lag behind the first row, even though the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) encouraged it, meaning the first row, and he said
If people knew what was in the adhan
Muwatta Malik 3:3
, meaning the adhan
and the first row, and they found no other way to get that except drawing lots, then they would draw lots.
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 225Sahih (Darussalam)
How much more so when the matter is easy.
So my advice to my brothers who delay in the manner we mentioned is to hasten to good and to race to it. And I warn them of the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) when he saw delay among his companions:
If people continue to lag behind, Allah will put them back.
Sunan Ibn Majah 978Sahih (Darussalam)
. Yes.

The questioner : May Allah reward you, O Shaykh.
