Explanation of the Hadith of al-'Arba' ibn Sariyah.
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : As al-'Arba' ibn Sariyah (may Allah be pleased with him) said, and he was one of the poor Companions who used to take shelter in the Suffah, having no concern other than the company of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and benefiting from his knowledge (peace and blessings be upon him). He said: "The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) gave us a sermon that made our hearts tremble and our eyes flow with tears. We said, 'O Messenger of Allah, it is as if it is the testament of one who is about to leave us, so give us a testament to which we shall not need anyone after you, ever.'" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Then came other hadiths of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) with wordings that differ from the wording of the general statement, but they support the meaning of the general statement mentioned in this hadith and in what came before it. For example, his saying (peace and blessings be upon him): Sunan al-Bayhaqi 17:1261 This also means that general principle which came in the two hadiths mentioned just now, because you have learned from the verse [Al-Ma'idah 5:3] that the religion has been completed; it has been completed. So whoever innovates something in this religion, the general statement says: Sahih Muslim 1718a meaning it is rejected by the one who innovated that innovation, because the religion is complete, and praise be to Allah, as in the verse [Al-Ma'idah 5:3]. So whenever we mention a hadith, even if it does not contain the wording: but it supports this general principle fully.
I advise you to fear Allah and to listen and obey, even if a slave from Abyssinia is made your leader. Whoever lives among you will see much disagreement. So hold fast to my Sunnah and the Sunnah of the Rightly Guided Caliphs after me. Cling to them with your teeth. Beware of newly invented matters, for every innovation is a bid'ah (religious innovation), and every bid'ah is misguidance, and every misguidance is in the Fire.
