The Shaykh’s mention of the hadith of Aisha and al-‘Arba’ ibn Sariyah (may Allah be pleased with them both) regarding the warning against religious innovations

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : Perhaps all the brothers present know from the indication of this hadith and similar ones that are established in the books of the Sunnah with sound chains of narration back to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), such as the hadith of Aisha
'A'isha reported Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) as saying: He who innovates things in our affairs for which there is no valid (reason) (commits sin) and these are to be rejected. من أحدث في أمرنا هذا ما ليس منه فهو رد
Sahih Muslim 1718a
and the hadith of al-‘Arba’ ibn Sariyah (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: “The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) gave us a sermon that made our hearts tremble and our eyes weep. So we said, ‘O Messenger of Allah, give us advice.’ He said:
I advise you to fear Allah and to obey and listen, even if a slave from Abyssinia is appointed as your ruler. Indeed, whoever among you lives will see much disagreement. So hold firmly to my Sunnah and the Sunnah of the rightly guided caliphs after me, and cling to them with your molars. Beware of newly invented matters, for every newly invented matter is an innovation, and every innovation is misguidance.
These hadiths confirm what I think you understand and believe, that innovation in religion is entirely misguidance. I mean in religion, because the blameworthy innovation is specific to religion. As for matters of this world, some of it is praiseworthy and some is blameworthy, depending on the innovator: if it contradicts the Shari’ah, it is blameworthy, and if it does not contradict it, it is at least permissible.
