If a person has wealth sufficient for the expenses of one of two acts of worship, such as Hajj and marriage, for example, which should he prioritize?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : A young man says, "I have what I can afford. I have enough money to get married, but I cannot afford to perform Hajj. Or I can perform Hajj, but I cannot get married until Allah wills it. What should he do?" I understood from the jurisprudence of Ibn Taymiyyah (may Allah have mercy on him), as I gave an example, that a person who recites the Qur'an has his heart illuminated more than by some dhikr and routines, or the reverse. So I also say, just as Ibn Taymiyyah did, and he solved an old scholarly disagreement that you have surely read about or paused over, whether briefly or at length. It is the disagreement over which is better: the grateful rich man or the patient poor man? It was said this way and that way. He solved the problem, may Allah have mercy on him and be pleased with him. Although this expression of pleasure is known for the Companions, we do not adhere to it, by the way. He solved the problem by saying: "The better of the two is the one closer to Allah." How is that? Is the grateful rich man really better, or the patient poor man? My brother, how do we know the type of worship of this one and the type of worship of that one? Whoever has more worship and draws closer to Allah is the better one. So, it is as if he (may Allah have mercy on him) is saying: It is not correct for us to compare them verbally and say: "The grateful rich man is better than the patient poor man," nor the reverse. So I say: In this case, regarding this question and its many similar cases, I say, my brother, if you are eager to marry and you fear for yourself regarding abstaining from marriage, then marry. Then, when the ability to perform Hajj becomes easy for you, perform Hajj. You are not, by Allah, one of the young men of this time whom we do not see thinking about marriage. So seize the opportunity and perform Hajj because you were able to perform Hajj, and so on.
