Ruling on performing Hajj before marriage and the reverse

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The first message in this episode was sent to the program from the Syrian Arab Republic, from a listener there who indicated his name with the letters (A. B. S). He says: I am a young man, eighteen years old, a student in the third year of secondary school. My mother is about fifty-eight years old, and my father has been deceased for fifteen years. I want my mother to go for Hajj, but she says that it is not permissible and is forbidden until she gets married. I ask your Eminence to inform me, as my mother prefers that I get married before she performs Hajj. Please guide us on this matter. May Allah reward you with good.
Answer: In the name of Allah, the Most Merciful, the Bestower of Mercy. Praise be to Allah, and may Allah send prayers and peace upon the Messenger of Allah, and upon his family and his Companions, and upon whoever follows his guidance.
As for what follows: There is no doubt that Hajj is obligatory for every person who is able to find the means to it; due to the saying of Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) :
And [due] to Allah from the people is a pilgrimage to the House - for whoever is able to find thereto a wayوَلِلَّهِ عَلَى النَّاسِ حِجُّ الْبَيْتِ مَنِ اسْتَطَاعَ إِلَيْهِ سَبِيلًا
[Al-Imran: 97]. So, if you are able to perform Hajj in terms of money, it is obligatory for you to perform Hajj. And if she is able to perform Hajj in terms of money, it is obligatory for her to perform Hajj. If you start with marriage because you are in need of marriage, there is no harm; because marriage is also obligatory with the presence of desire and longing for it, due to the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):
Young man, those of you who can support a wife should marry, for it keeps you from looking at strange women and preserves you from immorality; but those who cannot should devote themselves to fasting, for it is a means of suppressing sexual desire.يا معشر الشباب! من استطاع منكم الباءة فليتزوج؛ فإنه أغض للبصر وأحصن للفرج، ومن لم يستطع فعليه بالصوم فإنه له وجاء
Mishkat al-Masabih 3080
.
In any case: There is no harm in performing Hajj before marriage. Your mother’s statement that it is forbidden is a mistake on her part, may Allah forgive us and her. There is no harm in Hajj; rather, you must perform Hajj if you are able to perform Hajj. You may prioritize marriage if you desire marriage and fear harm or danger from delaying it. Likewise, if the intention is for her to perform Hajj, she should also perform Hajj, even before her marriage, if she is able to perform Hajj, or if you are able to perform Hajj so that you can enable her to perform Hajj from your wealth. Then, there is no harm for her to perform Hajj before she gets married and before you get married, even if she performs Hajj while she is a widow and has not married. Likewise, if her intention is regarding you, there is no harm in her performing Hajj before you get married.
The point is that this statement is not in its proper place; it is a mistake. You may get married, and she may get married, and there is no harm in that. As for delaying Hajj until you get married or until she gets married, this has no basis. Rather, this is permissible and this is permissible. If she is able to perform Hajj and has not performed it, she must perform Hajj after her waiting period ends, if she is... even though your father has been dead for a long time. She must perform Hajj if she is able to perform Hajj. And you must perform Hajj if you are able to perform Hajj, even before marriage. If you wish to prioritize marriage, there is no harm in that. The matter is broad in this regard; because this is obligatory and this is obligatory. With the presence of desire, if you desire marriage and fear for yourself, then if you prioritize marriage, there is no harm, and if you prioritize Hajj, there is no harm. You must convince her and direct her to good, and teach her what you have just heard. Perhaps she will also listen to this program and benefit in this matter and return from her statement. Yes.
The presenter: May Allah accept, may Allah reward you with good. The understanding of the message, as I understood it, Your Eminence the Shaykh, is that the mother is the one who refuses to perform Hajj until her son gets married?
The Shaykh: All of it has no basis, whether the intention is for her or for the son. In any case, she may perform Hajj even if her son does not get married, and he may perform Hajj before marriage. It is not a condition to prioritize marriage, but if he needs marriage and fears for himself and prioritizes marriage, there is no harm. Yes.
The presenter: May Allah reward you with good. Perhaps she wants to save the expenses for her son’s marriage?
The Shaykh: It may be so, but it is not permissible to... forbidden. Do not say: forbidden. If she means: We want to marry you, and it is recommended that we start with you... from the perspective of prioritizing marriage over Hajj, this is not a problem if necessity calls for it. Yes.
The presenter: But do not say: forbidden.
The Shaykh: Yes.
The presenter: May Allah reward you with good.
