The Shaykh : The reality is that working in a Western embassy, if it is an embassy known for its hostility toward Islam and Muslims, is a single matter that is not permissible. This is because it falls under the general prohibition in the statement of Allah, Blessed and Exalted is He: First and foremost. Second, if a Muslim works in one of these embassies, especially if the work is in a land of disbelief, it is a form of taking them as allies. Thus, there are two reasons preventing it: the first is that it is cooperation with the disbeliever, and the second is taking the disbeliever as an ally. For the Muslim who has been commanded to oppose the polytheists and disbelievers cannot be at peace being a regular employee in an embassy that opposes Islam and Muslims. As for if the embassy, or if one is employed in an Arab embassy, and I am sorry that the word "Arab" has become predominant in our usage today in place of "Islamic embassy." We mean, as the non-Arabs mean when they say of us, "So-and-so is an Arab," they do not pronounce the 'ayn, saying "So-and-so is a Harb." It may be that Al-Albani is here? Where is this Bukhari? If they say "Harb," they mean a Muslim, because it is predominant in their minds that the majority of Arabs by lineage are Muslims in religion and school of thought. The point is that this embassy in which this Muslim works, if the good predominates in it and there is an attempt to help Muslims in their affairs, then it is permissible. Otherwise, it is included with the first category.
