Is receiving the meanings from the righteous Salaf obligatory to the same degree as receiving the words from them?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : The answer to this point lies in this hadith, in the point of the hadith before it, and in the point of the verse before both of them. It is as follows: We all know that we received Islam through these righteous Salaf. We did not know the Qur'an except through their path, and we did not know the Sunnah of the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) except through their path. So it remains for us to know something else through their path, because we will say, as a fact with no dispute, no doubt, and no uncertainty, that these Salaf who heard the Qur'an and the Sunnah from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) fresh and new, received it from him (peace and blessings be upon him) explained and interpreted. The explanation of the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him)—and here is a point we must always remember on such an occasion—divides into three categories: by his speech, by his action, and by his approval. He says something, and these are the verbal hadiths of the Messenger. He does something, and these are his practical hadiths. And he sees something and remains silent about it, so it becomes a law. Just now I mentioned to you the story of 'Amr ibn al-'As performing dry ablution (tayammum) out of fear of the cold, while water was available. He (peace and blessings be upon him) did not say anything to him, but he approved what he did, so we took a ruling from that. Who transmitted this approval to us? It was 'Abdullah ibn 'Umar, to whom the story happened. He is a Companion from those Companions. Thus, those who transmitted the words to us also transmitted the meanings to us. So, just as we must receive the words through their path, we must receive the meanings through their path.
