Discussion of the Sufis.

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : Here, I must also pause, and the matter is, as they say, even if it is long: "The hadith has many branches." Many Muslims today fall into shirk (associating partners with Allah) regarding the names and attributes. Many people, especially those who lean toward what they call Sufism—those Sufis who believe that some of the awliya (close friends of Allah) and the righteous know what is in the heart and that they know the unseen. They did not stop at this misguidance; rather, they seek nearness to Allah (Mighty and Majestic) when they describe a servant of Allah with what is not fitting for anyone but Allah (Mighty and Majestic). I mean by this the statement of al-Busiri, who addresses the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in his poem in his Burdah, saying:
"For from Your generosity are the world and its twin, *** And from Your knowledge is the knowledge of the Tablet and the Pen."
What did this describer leave for the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) by saying that of His knowledge is, as the linguists say, a part, meaning: from some of Your knowledge, O Messenger of Allah, is the knowledge of the Tablet and the Pen! What did this describer leave in this poetry for Allah (Blessed and Exalted is He), who is the One who said:
Say, "None in the heavens and earth knows the unseen except Allah قل لا يعلم من في السموات والأرض الغيب إلا الله
[An-Naml 27:65]
. Thus, the chosen Messenger of Allah, who is the master of the messengers and prophets, does not know the unseen, by the testimony of this Noble Qur'an. Therefore, it came in a hadith in Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim, a long hadith, and the point of it is the statement of the Lady A'isha (may Allah be pleased with her): "Whoever tells you that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to know what is in tomorrow has lied, or she said: has committed the greatest lie against Allah." Then she recited the previous verse
Say, "None in the heavens and earth knows the unseen except Allah قل لا يعلم من في السموات والأرض الغيب إلا الله
[An-Naml 27:65]
.
It also came in Sahih al-Bukhari that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) passed by a slave girl from the slave girls of the Ansar, and she was singing and saying: "And among us is a Prophet who knows what is in tomorrow." So he (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
No one knows the unseen except Allah. Leave this and say what you used to say. لا يعلم الغيب إلا الله دعي هذا و قولي مثل كنت تقولين
. In describing the Messenger (peace be upon him) with what Allah described him with in the Noble Qur'an, such as His saying (Mighty and Majestic):
And indeed, you are upon a great character وإنك لعلى خلق عظيم
. Therefore, memorize this and understand it in it. Tawhid (the oneness of Allah) has three divisions: Tawhid al-rububiyyah (oneness of lordship), and this is necessary, but the polytheists, when they believed in it, it did not benefit them anything. Tawhid is not complete except with the second and the third. The second is Tawhid al-uluhiyyah (oneness of worship), that you do not worship other than Allah absolutely, with anything, even by swearing by other than Allah, and how much swearing by other than Allah occurs.
The third Tawhid is that you make Allah unique in His names and in His attributes, so you do not describe a human being with an attribute from the attributes of Allah, such as thinking that any of the chosen good ones knows the unseen. No one knows the unseen except Allah. Perhaps this amount is sufficient until we make room for some questions from our brothers whom we came intending to them and to listen to their questions. Perhaps the brother Ibrahim will unify them, for perhaps there will be some repetitions in them.
