Why are many of the mufassirun (commentators) not from the people of the Sunnah?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner : Also, O Shaykh, there is another question. Through my reading and study of the books of tafsir (exegesis), I find that a number of the mufassirun (commentators) are weak, and in fact, a large number of them are either Ash'ari or from other groups. What is the reason for that?

The Shaykh : Do you mean the authors of tafsir (exegesis)?

The questioner : Yes, the authors of tafsir (exegesis).

The Shaykh : Of course, these are from the later generations.

The questioner : When we say "from the later generations," from which century do we mean, O Shaykh?

The Shaykh : I mean after the centuries that are attested to be virtuous.

The questioner : Yes, I mean that authorship did not really begin except in them. So if we look for mufassirun (commentators) in the books of the Sunnah, we find al-Tabari, al-Baghawi, Ibn Kathir, and the rest are few. As for the others...

The Shaykh : The reason, may Allah reward you, is very clear. The Salafi methodology is rare in all these years and centuries. So who will author on tafsir (exegesis) like those who authored on hadith? For example, you have al-Suyuti, who appears to be the last of the preservers of hadith, and Allah knows best, and he is Ash'ari. And before him, and he is more memorizing and more knowledgeable than him, is al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani, and before him is al-Nawawi. All of these are Ash'ari. That is because this is what prevailed in the Islamic societies for these long centuries that followed the three centuries attested to be virtuous. So this is a natural matter. Please, go ahead.
