What is the Muslim's position regarding the scholars of the Muslims?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : Here a question may arise: What is the Muslim's position regarding the scholars of the Muslims, especially those who are famous for knowledge, righteousness, and piety? I do not mean only the four Imams, for it is from the grace of Allah, Blessed and Exalted is He, that He has bestowed upon the Muslims, throughout the ages and centuries, hundreds, indeed thousands, of scholars of the Muslims. So what is the Muslim's position in this age, when people are calling others to make the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) the standard in following him? What is this Muslim's position regarding the scholars of the Muslims? We say that the position is the obligation to follow them, as long as they hold fast to and direct us to the Sunnah of their Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Here I draw your attention to a verse in the Qur'an whose meaning must be present in our minds, namely His saying, Blessed and Exalted is He:
So ask the people of the message if you do not know.
[An-Nahl 16:43]
This verse divides the people, the Muslims in general, into two categories: the scholar and the non-scholar. And upon each of the two categories He has imposed a ruling befitting it. The larger category is those who do not know, so He addressed them by saying, the Exalted:
So ask the people of the message if you do not know.
[An-Nahl 16:43]
This is the larger category of Muslims: that they are not scholars. So their obligation is to ask the people of knowledge, and the obligation of the people of knowledge is that when they are asked, they should answer. And this covenant was taken from them in the Noble Qur'an to convey knowledge to the people and not to conceal it. And the Sunnah confirms this with complete confirmation. Among that is the famous hadith:
He who is asked about knowledge (of religion) and conceals it, will be bridled with a bridle of fire on the Day of Resurrection.
Riyad as-Salihin 1390
So the obligation of the Muslims in general is to ask the people of knowledge. Therefore, these people have no choice but to turn to the scholars when in need and in difficult matters, because Allah, Mighty and Majestic, commanded them to do so:
So ask the people of the message if you do not know.
[An-Nahl 16:43]
However, the people of knowledge are not in our estimation in the same position as our Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), who is protected from error and conveys from Allah, and falsehood does not come to him from before or behind him, because he is protected from error. As for the scholars, they are not so; rather, they are conveyors from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). One of them may hit the mark and one may err, and there is no protection from error for anyone after the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), contrary to some sects that claim protection from error for the Household of the Prophet. This is a deviation from the Book and the Sunnah. So there is no protection from error for anyone after the Messenger, not for Ali, not for Abu Bakr, nor for any of the noble Companions, let alone the scholars who came after them. And the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) pointed to this reality with the authentic hadith, saying:
When a judge gives a decision having tried his best to decide correctly and is right, he will have a double reward; and when he gives a decision having tried his best to decide correctly and is wrong, he will have a single reward.
Mishkat al-Masabih 3732
So the scholar errs and hits the mark, whereas our Prophet does not err in the Shari'ah at all; rather, he is protected from error, as we mentioned earlier. From this, it is obligatory that we make our partisanship in our religion for only one man, namely the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and we do not become partisan for any scholar of the Muslims. And when we seek their help and take their guidance to direct us to what the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was upon.
