The Shaykh : Come closer, my brothers, come closer. Among the etiquette of the scholarly gathering is that you do not scatter. Perhaps you have all heard the hadith of Abu Thalhah al-Khushani in the Musnad of Imam Ahmad. He said: “When we traveled with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), we would scatter in the valleys and ravines. So one day he said to us (peace and blessings be upon him):
Your scattering in the valleys and ravines is from the work of Satan. إنما تفرقكم هذا في شعاب و الوديان من عمل الشيطان
” It is not about lessons or jurisprudence; rather, when traveling, they would stop at a place where one would take shade under a tree, two, three, four, and so on, scattering about. He said: “So after that, when we would stop at a place, if we sat on a carpet, it would be enough for us; on a carpet, it would be enough for us.” And therefore, it is not among the etiquette of the scholarly and jurisprudential gathering what we used to see in Damascus, in the Great Mosque, a very large circle; the larger and emptier it was, the stronger the knowledge was, and the opposite is the opposite. And therefore, we should observe in our scholarly gatherings, at least, that we sit close together and do not sit far from one another, because this is in reality related to the rectitude of the outward appearance, which affects the rectitude of the inward state, just as the rectitude of the inward state affects the rectitude of the outward appearance. It is as if it is in a state of what they call perpetual motion. Please, Professor, benefit us from what you have written. I have finished with what I have.
