Among the characteristics of the month of Ramadan: that Allah made fasting obligatory, and the meaning of His saying, the Exalted: "Fasting has been prescribed for you."

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : And among the characteristics of this month is that Allah made fasting obligatory and made it one of the pillars of Islam. He, the Exalted, said:
O you who have believed, decreed upon you is fasting as it was decreed upon those before you يا أيها الذين آمنوا كتب عليكم الصيام كما كتب على الذين من قبلكم
[Al-Baqarah 2:183]
The meaning of "prescribed" is "made obligatory," because "writing" (kitab) means that which is made obligatory, as He, the Exalted, said:
Indeed, prayer has been decreed upon the believers a decree of specified times. إِنَّ الصَّلَاةَ كَانَتْ عَلَى الْمُؤْمِنِينَ كِتَابًا مَّوْقُوتًا
[An-Nisa 4:103]
There is no doubt that making fasting obligatory for the Ummah is from the wisdom of Allah, Mighty and Majestic, because through it the accountability for which a person is held is completed.
