Clarification that a person does not perform i'tikaf (spiritual retreat in the mosque) except on the odd nights of the last ten days of Ramadan.

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : Some of them do not perform i'tikaf (spiritual retreat in the mosque) except on the odd nights of the last ten days, meaning the night of the twenty-first, the twenty-third, the twenty-fifth, the twenty-seventh, and the twenty-ninth. As for the night of the twenty-second, the twenty-fourth, the twenty-sixth, and the twenty-eighth, he remains in his house. Is this in accordance with the Sunnah? I ask you: Did the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) not perform i'tikaf (spiritual retreat in the mosque) except on the odd nights of the last ten days, or did he perform i'tikaf (spiritual retreat in the mosque) for all ten days? He performed i'tikaf (spiritual retreat in the mosque) for all ten days. So we say to our brothers: Either bring the Sunnah as it is, or leave it to those who are qualified for it. It is well known that i'tikaf (spiritual retreat in the mosque) is a recommended practice (sunnah) and not obligatory. It is a recommended practice (sunnah), but performing it in a manner other than that in which the Sunnah came is, in reality, a transgression against the Sunnah. This implies that another jurist might come and perform i'tikaf (spiritual retreat in the mosque) in a different way, performing it at night but not during the day. I think there are those who perform i'tikaf (spiritual retreat in the mosque) at night but not during the day. And a third person might come and say, "I will perform i'tikaf (spiritual retreat in the mosque) during the day but not at night, because during the day I am fasting and do not attain what I desire from the desires that Allah has permitted for me other than during fasting. And at night I am able to enjoy what Allah has permitted for me of the pleasures of this world. So I perform i'tikaf (spiritual retreat in the mosque) during the day and not at night." This would be contrary to the purpose of i'tikaf (spiritual retreat in the mosque). The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) only performed i'tikaf (spiritual retreat in the mosque) in order to seek out the Night of Decree. For this reason, he performed i'tikaf (spiritual retreat in the mosque) in the first ten days, then in the middle ten days, until it was told to him that it is in the last ten days, so he performed i'tikaf (spiritual retreat in the mosque) in the last ten days. Therefore, I advise my brothers who desire good in their i'tikaf (spiritual retreat in the mosque) to adhere to what the Sunnah has brought. Otherwise, let them leave the matter to those who are qualified for it, who apply what the Sunnah has brought, and they are in a state of being free from blame, because i'tikaf (spiritual retreat in the mosque) is not obligatory.
