The Shaykh : For this reason, I am telling you this story, and although it is frightening, perhaps Allah will make good in it. There was a man with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) in one of the battles, and he did not leave for the enemy any weak point or strong point except that he dealt with it; he was brave, bold, and self-sacrificing. So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Sahih al-Bukhari 4203 A Companion who fights bravely and self-sacrificingly against the enemy. He said: Sahih al-Bukhari 4203 So a man from among the Companions said, "By Allah, I will keep him company, meaning I will accompany him, to see what happens." Then this man was hit by an arrow; he was hit by an arrow from the enemy. He panicked, so he took the point of his sword, meaning its tip, and placed it between his two armpits, then leaned on it until the sword came out of his back and he died. So his end was that he killed himself. And the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) informed that whoever kills himself with something will be punished with it in the Fire of Hell, remaining in it eternally, being kept in it. The point is that a man may do the deeds of the people of Paradise as far as people can see, yet he is among the people of the Fire. And this necessitates for a person fear and anxiety, and that he should always be with his heart, purifying it and cleansing it from shirk (associating partners with Allah), from doubt, from hypocrisy, from hatred, from enmity toward the Muslims, from animosity, and so on. And a person must always be with his heart, because it is upon it that the matter depends.
