The Shaykh’s discussion with the students regarding previous issues of divorce.

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : The important point is that it is obligatory for a man, if he wishes to divorce his wife, to divorce her during her waiting period. This applies in two cases: if she is pregnant, or if she is in a state of purity in which he has not had intercourse with her. He should fear Allah regarding divorce outside the waiting period, which also applies in two cases: if she is menstruating, or if she is in a state of purity in which he has had intercourse with her. Now, Allah the Exalted said:
and keep count of the waiting period, and fear Allah, your Lord. وأحصوا العدة واتقوا الله ربكم
[At-Talaq 65:1]
"Count the waiting period." What does "count" mean? It means to keep track of it. This word is derived from "pebbles" (hassaa), because the Arabs used to keep track of numbers using pebbles, just as people before them used to keep track of numbers using date pits. Hence the saying of the poet: "I am not the one with more pebbles than them, but rather honor belongs to the one with more"
"I am not the one with more pebbles than them" means that your number is small, not large. A small number is usually defeated and overcome in any case.
