Issue: What is preferable for a person: to fulfill his oath or to break it?
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : But is it preferable for a person to fulfill his oath or to break it? What is preferable? To fulfill his oath or to break it and persist, except if there is good in breaking it. If there is good in breaking it, then break it and offer expiation, as the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Sahih al-Bukhari 6718 For example, if a dispute arises between you and your Muslim brother and you say, "By Allah, I will not speak to him," or "By Allah, I will not enter his house," this is an oath upon a sin, because what necessarily follows from this oath is what? Boycott, and boycotting a Muslim is forbidden. We say now, break your oath, cut your oath, and offer expiation. Likewise, if a person says, "By Allah, I will not pray the regular voluntary prayer after the midday prayer," we tell him, cut your oath and pray, because prayer is better than not praying. If breaking the oath is better, then cut your oath and offer expiation for it. The evidence for this is the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): Sahih al-Bukhari 6718.
